Visit to Woodstock
« on: June 08, 2012, 08:54:52 PM »

What with the ridiculously unseasonal weather I had to do something to sate my appetite for cricket based things, so I did what any self respecting forumite would do and drove a ridiculous distance to fondle some willow and probably part with some cash. This is bat number 4 of this season which gives you a clue as to how much rain we have had so far this year. If it carries on like this I'm going to have no money and no room left in my house soon. So anyway I took the scenic route to Clee St Margaret (thanks to my satnav) and found myself at the door of Mr. John Newsome.

He's got a very nice set up in a specially converted stable/barn and I spent some time just chatting and looking around, breathing in all the lovely woody smells and salivating at the prospects. I picked up a particularly good looking, unstickered stick and was told it was the one sent to Wisden that earned the tour de force the moniker of The Don's official 'pick', but sadly he was not keen to part with it. He then showed me some of the ready mades and nearly finished bats he had ready to leave the workshop but none of them really tickled my fancy so we delved into the rough part mades until we found something satisfactory. I had my heart set on an off book low middled profile I had seen a Cleobury Mortimer player wielding the previous week (Tidbit: John said that particular profile was almost identical to the one Yuvraj used to ask for from Newbery) and I wasn't disappointed as we found an 8-9 grainer that ticked all the boxes.

John was really helpful and keen to make sure I was happy with what I was getting, he shaped the handle so I could get a proper feel for the bat and we spent a good amount of time testing the pick up, tapping it up with his lignum vitae mallet and bouncing a ball on it until I was satisfied this was going to be the one for me. All in all I was very satisfied with the experience and the service and would recommend Woodstock to anyone based on that. I felt well looked after and he even knocked some money off because I had made the trip, but the proof will of course be in the pudding, I will report back when it has arrived next week with full pictures and details of how it actually performs in action.  Here are some pictures of it in its current state, at the moment it weighs just a shade under 2'11.

Worcester dude, How's your one going then? Should I be expecting big things? I haven't seen many reviews on here by people but John did say a few other CBers had been to visit him. Did you go for a Curve or Tour de Force? The middle was just far, far too high for me on those curves. Maybe if I was playing in Australia sometime soon!

The finished article arrived today (also my birthday so good timing) and I can officially say that I'm a very happy lad. The pick up is nigh on perfect for me, it looks great, finish quality is certainly up there if not quite in the top echelons set by Salix and Laver but certainly very nice indeed. I've now had a chance to weigh her on the scales and she comes in at bang on 2.12 which is about what I expected and is the perfect weight for me after various experiments with different bats. My H4L is 2.13 1/4 but picks up like a 2.11/12 and this feels about the same which is what I hoped it would. Grains wise we're talking 9 straight all sapwood, usually my ideal bat would have a lot more grains and preferably some heartwood but I'm trying to get out of this grain obsession I have. The profile is fantastic, the edges measure in at a hefty 40MM and the middle looks long, generous and packed full of punch, and the bat doesn't feel heavy at all despite the low middle. The ball and mallet test find it to be responsive but I don't trust that test much to be honest and I won't really know anything until its used properly which won't be for a week or two so I'll have to report back with a proper review on how it plays, but aesthetically its a pleasing chunk of willow, feels great being swished about and having owned a fair few good quality bats over the years I can say with some confidence that this one has all the makings of a keeper!

Looks very good, I have one of these too! I use lighter bats (around 2.10ish mark) whereas mine is XL so assuming it is near 2.12ish as well. Regardless of its dead weight the feel of it is extremely good.

Is it me but it looks like a flat face? Mine is not surprisingly.

Hmm do you mind telling me what shoulder stamps have it got?

It does have quite a flat face. Are there degrees of flatness or is it simply either one or the other? I'm not 100% sure to be honest! Its not as obvious as it is on some of the GN's for instance. Would explain why the edges are so pronounced. The stamp on the shoulder is CE,  any chance you can you fill me in on its significance please!

Actually no it does not have any degrees of flatness, it is simply either one or another.

Since it has flat face that gives extra 2-3 mm edges and in addition make them more pronounced.

CE is registration I would call, I think C denotes to 2012 whereas E is month which is fifth month, but it is suppose to be F as its in June.

I have CC which means March 2012.

Looks a top stick buddy, you've got a tough job picking numero uno this season with the bats in your collection now!

Its going to have a seriously hard time ousting my H4L 666 to be honest, that thing is kryptonite for cricket balls.
