Advice on how to repair this

So doing this as a gesture of good will to a really good mate of mine, his M&H Original made by Julian himself about 15 years ago. As you can see its been heavily used and in a bad condition. I have a chunk of willow I could cut and mould into the crack but wanted some suggestions on what to do from people on here as I have never dealt with something this damaged

I think it is time your mate bought a new bat. If his bats last 15 years, then a SCat would be a reasonable investment!

Insert bat into coffin, drape coffin with flag, get some pall bearers to walk it down the aisle, sing Abide with Me and say a prayer or two, Pallbearers walk it back up the aisle to graveyard, stick it in a hole in the ground, fire off 16 gun salute of grave, throw on a handful of earth saying from dust we cam to dust we return and then fill in grave, place nice headstone with stats on at the top of grave, then get him on the forum to purchase a lovely new stick!

dam that is a shame, could I not insert some willow into it and mould it to fit the bits that had broken of or is this Legend  finished?

you could mend it in the way you suggest, but the bat should still be retired in my view.

You'd probably have to take the whole edge off, and drill holes through the edge, add dowels in to hold the new pieces in place, and hope you didn't lose any middle that it had left...

Or tell him to get a SCAT.

That sounds like a huge operation, probably best it was retired. Oh well

It has obviously had a long and fruitful life and should perhaps now be looking forward to retirement.

I would chisel the edge square and then trim the donor willow to fit, glue and clamp. Then once dry I would glue and clamp all the other cracks up the same edge. Once they’ve dried I’d cut off the excess willow from the new price. Then sand and maybe put a hardwood dowel through the toe.

Hope that makes sense.

i carried out something similar on a mates bat during the winter. the back bottom corner had blown out the back. cleaned it up square using a chisel and then added a donor piece in. its holding well at the moment but always a risk. id repair it then probably keep it as a collectors piece. if you continue to use it it will probably go  in a big way.
