That isn't storm damage by the looks it, storm damaged willow breaks across the grain

I thought it was a bad splice judging by the high point of the crack at the base of the splice and the way the crack propagates away from the handle towards the toe on each side suggesting that the hole was too small and was forcing the willow apart, but happy to be told otherwise.
