Salix Bats - views please!
« on: July 06, 2012, 04:04:04 PM »

Unless I'm looking in the wrong places, I don't see Salix mentioned much on this Forum, which I find a little surprising, for the following reasons:

I have recently started using a Praestantia Performance and it really is a class apart from any other bat I have ever used - it even seems to ping off the toe, and for me, Salix are second to none in terms of pick up and quality finish - the willow is like ivory - even on the grade 2s, just stunning! The grains are always impeccable too.

They are critically acclaimed, hand make all their bats in England - and the bat maker doesn't happened to be called Tim Keeley, which in itself is unique for this type of bat! They are also a lovely brand to deal with from a retail point of view...

What are people's experience of Salix? Good, bad, or ugly - I'd be really interested to hear...

Best bat I've ever owned, it's just a shame I cracked the shoulder in the last game I played!

I agree with your comments especially with pick up!

Top bat makers.

I used to have the Praestantia Performance as a backup bat a couple of seasons ago and it was excellent!
Also just knocking in/playing in a Salix Strike Players which also feels superb. The finish is top notch and the pick up and performance of the Strike is (on initial impression at least) on a par with most of my bats. Time will tell if it's in the absolute top category but it's looking like a strong contender so far!  ;)

They are really good bats, great finishing on them.
I think for the price they are there isn't really much Customization to them. I class M&H as a sort of opposition to Salix (Both being 'Old fashioned' -Stickers and Softs IMO) and I think there is more customization with M&H, different shapes, You go from the shape of a solution to something like the Amplus whereas Salix's shapes are really quite similar.
I also think there is more emphasis on actually going to M&H's workshop for some reason.
But then again that is my opinion

Got a Salix as my main match bat for this season! The performance for its size is unreal!

Don't like them, if AJK is so good why the boring shapes - why not try something more adventurous? All their shapes are the same, and they never look very big for their weight either.

Possibly the best of-the-shelf bats at the moment. Using a Salix Praestantia Grade 1 and it is amazing. Superb balance, pick-up and performance.

Also, one of the classiest branding.

Ironically, one of the most expensive bats till last season is one of the more well priced one - price v quality.

Only downside is that the profiles are not very different - all seem to be high-ish mid to mid middle.

Rolls Royce of bats.

Fantastic bats. My Salix Pod was close to being the best if not the best bat I've owned. Unbelievably light pick up for a 2.9oz bat, felt like I was only holding the handle. The ball simply flew off with very little effort. Won the most 6's trophy at my club for 2 seasons using it and I'm not a prolific 6 hitter normally. Sadly it broke earlier this season and can't afford a new one yet.

Took it to Hawk to be repaired and they raved about how good Salix and AJK are and that they are a benchmark for other bat makers. So if they highly regarded within the trade they must be fairly good!

Do you think this might be simply because they don't have as much access to oversized clefts? Not sure if there might be more of these rare clefts in Somerset than Kent - I'm not 100% sure, but I bet others on here can help clear this up?

Oversized clefts aren't rare, they're just cut bigger. Depends which willow merchant you use as to whether you buy them. Salix's shapes don't require a bigger cleft, so no need to buy them.

They have experimented with other variations in bat design, namely the cambered edge and the shorter blade/shorter handle combos.

The fact that M&H use them for the Amplus and Distinction is a major reason why they have more variations on shape, though - which was the original point.  Why are M&H more willing to use these oversized clefts and experiment more than Salix, then?

If it isn't broke don't fix it....Ben (salix trainee batmaker)who is on the forum had a very nice bat with him tht he used at wormsley that was going to be new to the range. It Went very well too!!!

The finishing on the Salix bats has to be one of the best out there and they perhaps don't need to cater for the big edge profile bad if they are happy with their market share that works currently ???

Lovely bats that pick up and go well. They don't need giant edges or cool shapes as they tend to perform without this. AJK is practically at capacityin terms of supply so obviously no need to change!

Just read an article on them - they are definitely on the rise, which is nice to see.  Also, I think there is a misunderstanding re. their pricing.  As they control every step of the bat making process and don't outsource any manufacturing or machining at all, their top grade 1 bats are actually considerably less than the major brands.  RRP of £375, in our case £299.99 for the Pod Players: http://www.itsjustcricket.co.uk/cricket-bats-c17/senior-cricket-bats-c18/salix-pod-players-cricket-bat-p443
