What will be the next innovation in batting technique?
« on: July 13, 2012, 08:51:25 PM »

I have been watching the athletics series on bbc about how athletes have got better and better and it always seems that the true legends have some slightly different technique.

I know Don Bradman had a "strange" technique and so did WG Grace but batting has evolved since then.

I wonder what will be the next development.

Im thinking of batting 100% chest on with all the weight on my back which is on off stump. Anything short i just step my front leg across, anything full i just push off my back leg. The problem of getting around to hit those balls outside leg shouldnt be too much of a problem as i would try not to go after anything too wide.

I'll give it a try tomorrow and see how i get on, its not ground breaking but i think a side on batting stance is very very over rated!

Sounds like your finding batting side-on too easy :)

I don't know how to put this, but, I'm kind of a big deal.

I walk across my stumps as it is now so im comfortable with the chest on stance.

I actually htink that being chest on wil lbe better for inswingers as i can hold my front leg back for longer and not plant it down and play round it. I can wait and take a small step and on drive it a lot better. A lot of runs can be scored once you start on driving balls on middle stump.

Im not worried about hitting it in the air as i think i can get in a better position and palce the ball into the gaps, i find a lot of people dont turn their back foot towards the bowler when playing horizontal shots to leg so they get cramped up by being too side on. Pull and hook shots require a chest on position.

Im hoping to trick the bowler into pitching it up to trap me LBW and i will dispatch im straight back over his head.

I'll give this a go and see how it goes.

Surely batting chest on (a la Chanderpaul) would lead to you getting squared up very easily?

how are you going to deliver the bat straight from a chest on stance? surely you will have to rotate it 45 degrees in to line, unless you plan on clubbing everything through square leg.

There's a guy in a team we play against that bats fully chest on - everytime I've played against him he's looked a prime canditate for LBW and hasnt got any runs. Apparently though he has had some high scores, but I cant see how.

Then again its not the strangest technique i've seen - a few weeks ago played against a right-handed bat that held the bat with his right hand on top and his arms crossed. Thought he'd just sky every ball or get tied up against short balls, but he stuck around for a while and built a decent 30+ score if I recall.

Our old opening bowler used to bat with this grip and no gloves and was surprisingly reasonable. He also used to roll a ball back from the front line at the start of his spell and run in from wherever the ball stopped. Safe to say quite a character!

I think the straight on idea is terrible.
how can you swing through the line?

I would thing we are more likely to see more players with the "Goochie" raised back lift similar to baseball to increase hitting power.
vulnerable to the yorker perhaps but you don't get yorkers over the pond.

Using an Ayrtek helmet to ramp over the keeper for six on a bouncer.

I dont think it would work againt any pace bowling.

Agree there is a shift back to googhie style, chris gayle is the perfect example.

I really really do wonder how people will bat in 50 years time when i am either dead or cant see far enough from the sideline to watch!

going for a hybrid of this full chest on stance in my final game tomorrow.

Im going to point both my feet to mid off on a leg stump guard and then trigger across so my back foot is on off and my front on middle and lean my head forward with the weight on the back foot.

At the point of delivery i will be 100% still, head forward and slightly chest on but not 100% and can play all the shots form this position ....

will let you know how it goes.
