Could it be my gloves?
« on: May 09, 2009, 08:31:40 PM »

Ok well I had a shocker keeping today, dropped 3 edges.
I was just wondering, my gloves appear to have excess leather on the palms and as a result when my hands are in them the leather folds slightly. Could this be causing me to drop catches or am I just dodgy? (Maybe a mix of both!)

I've thought the same about mine. Does gloves make you a better keeper?

I'd say gloves definatly do, you will do better if you have top of the range rather than bottom of the range...

Why do you think everybody on the forum spends so much money on  top of the range gear.......obviously we are all very good cricketers. Quite honestly, i might consider asking for your money back if i was you Leo......the gloves are obviously defective, there is no way if you spend a lot of money you shouldn't do well.....

Yeah I was trying to hide the last one and I also neglected to mention my golden duck today.
Just to expand on my point, if you gave MS Dohni a pair of them wicket keeping gloves you get in those sets I dont think he would do as good, same as if he had a pair of low range gloves rather than top of the range gloves.

''All the gear, no idea'' is a common sledge, and our fist team keeper (who incedentally is also the county keeper) his gloves are completely demolished and he still takes catches and stumpings every game! normally standing up to our opening bowlers.
in the end the gear makes no difference, it comes down to skill levels

Hmmm, I often umpire and play with one of the best keepers that has played in the last 50 years and he is absolutely particular about his gloves. He works a new set of gloves in in the nets and of course only uses top quality equipment. But that does not mean he uses the so called top name brands. Some of the smaller manufacturers produce great products.

Leo, when you have an off day playing, keeping is by far the hardest place to hide it. Timing is important of course and so is eyesight which can deteriorate very quickly. So get those eyes checked. If you need glasses wear them and don't fall for the contact lense caper unless you have loads of money to buy specific ones.

I wouldn't be so negative toward contact lenses art, they are far more practical than glasses, even if they are not tailored perfectly. I use daily disposable ones to play cricket and I'm very slightly short sighted (-0.5), and my vision is so crisp when I use them. I think a lot of people do not realise how bad their sight is, especially in the computer age, where your eyes become trained to focus over a short distance.

With regards to the gloves, I totally agree that gloves make a massive, massive difference. People that say a bad workman blames his tools are just looking for an easy way to have a dig. I bought a pair of Puma Ballistic 5000 (orange ones) a few years back, and I wasn't comfortable with them from the start really. I think I bought them for aesthetic reasons. I'm still using them today although this week I'm buying a new pair. I used to have a pair of Easton gloves, and they were superb. Gloves affect your performance directly, but they also affect your confidence. My pumas sting more than my old eastons did, so when keeping to particularly quick bowlers I flinch a little bit when taking the ball, no matter how soft I make my hands.

i barely keep total part timer, but the keepers i have talked to are ridicoulously piky, apprently gloves do make a huge diffrence to how people perform
