Modern or traditional
« on: July 22, 2012, 10:31:10 AM »

Watching the test match and various other games you always hear the mention of the modern ' big bat'. Obviously pretty mixed reviews on here as to what we prefer as an individual. Just wondered do any current pros use the traditional style thin edged bats or because of the pressure to perform all use the larger more forgiving modern shapes? Any pics of the classics still in use would be good.

Personally I prefer the traditional style but that's just me. I used a modern bat last year that went very well though. I think there's a lot of bat envy in the county game so bigger the better, also helps with confidence looking down and seeing a big lump of wood.

Broads bat has fairly thin edges but a massive spine

Let me ask this, Why do 99% of international batsmen use the modern "big bat" instead of the traditional shape? Surely they are there because they can perform and not because of a "forgiving" bat

Fashions and trends affect top level players too.

Modern profile by a distance. I cant recall any present player using anything but a large profile.
Even Dravid who has always used a light bat was using a thick modern profile which probably weighed 2.7.

All of them?

I imagine so (presuming you mean all of the trends rather than all of the players)

it could just be my eyes, but KP seems to have a traditional profile with relatively smallish edges

I imagine there must be some input from the sponsors?

Big bats are trendy at the moment, and kids want the bat they see their idols doing well with whilst having big edges, no the bats they use may be slightly different to the profile of the one on the shelf, but they don't want it to be stupidly easy to see do they?

Pros also do use the edges of their bats whilst trying to middle the ball, look at Cooks 6 against SA this week

So is it a case that the pros like these bats or it's what they are given? Take in to account someone like bell. Rumour is that hawk make his bats. So does he go to them and say I want it big but light etcetc? Is the way the pros have their bats influencing the fewer traditional profile bats out there

But most don't use the middle of the edge, quite like that!

If anything, the pros would be where the 'modern' bat started, whereby it weighed almost nothing with huge edges. An ODI invention, transfered to tests.

I championed the traditional bat for a long time but finally gave in recently and updated to a modern profile, times have changed, the modern bats are so advanced.
