What helmet to get...
« on: August 13, 2012, 11:08:15 PM »

Hey guys, I have been wanting to buy a new helmet since the start of the season now. I am unsure what helmet to go with however. I am currently using an Albion Club with a steel grill I believe, which is good, but I am starting to find it a little too bulky and it is a little heavy for me now. I used to be a tail ender, so I was never out in the middle for long for this to be an issue, but now that my batting has improved, I am looking for a lighter one which is less bulky.

I have considered getting either a new, less bulky Albion, Masuri or Ayrtek. I haven't really thought much about the other brands, as I know these three are probably the best. I was just wondering if anyone knows which one is the lightest? I would not be willing to sacrifice much protection or visibility and will be going for a titanium grill. Also, if I go with the Masuri, should I go for the current model, or wait for the 2013 model? I can only assume that the 2013 model is safer as that is always what manufacturers look for, but perhaps this is a stupid question as it hasn't been out yet.

That's a picture of the 2013 model of Masuri.

Essentially, I am just looking for a helmet which is better all round than the Albion I am currently using. The only thing that puts me off Ayrtek is the size really. I have a big head, so I use the thinnest pads which are supplied with the Albion, and use the large senior Albion, which caps at 63cm, while the Ayrtek apparently caps at 62cm. I am unsure of whether this affects it much though. (Also, a teammate said he would hit me if I got an Ayrtek because he doesn't like the look of it! :P) If I were to get an Ayrtek, I would probably get the Aytek Premier, so if anyone can get the weights of the Ayrtek Premier, the Masuri and the best Albion all with a Ti grill, I would be grateful! Ideally looking to spend less than £100, but will go a bit over if needed. The Ayrtek elite is obviously out of the question in this case, but if someone could get me the weight of that too it would be interesting to compare. :) Mostly looking to get the Masuri and Albion weights, as I could just ask Tom for the Ayrtek specs! (At least I think that's the Ayrtek man) 8)

Don't worry about the head size on the Ayrtek. I'm a 63cm head and still have to inflate the pads in the Ayrtek slightly.

The size we list is just a guide as the liner can be adjusted as Tim says, the masuri helmet is essentially the same shell but just with a different grille I believe.

for what it is worth, my view is that the biggest difference on the lid is having the titanium grille - that makes the helmet significantly more wearable.

The challenge is getting one at reasonable cost!!

I think the best budget choice is the albion club mark lid with an ayrtek ti grille (second hand ones on here tend to go for about £15-20 posted) - after that you should go for what is the most comfortable for you and what you can afford...

I am one of the people gifted with a larger cranium and I still have to pump up Ayrtek so should fit anyone's head

On a separate note, I got pinned on Saturday. First time I've been hit on the lid. One exploded off the pitch, batsman nicked it (so I'm told) right into the grille.

Puma claim their Ballistic helmet weighs 720 gr. I wouldn't know how this compares to others because weights are rarely given amongst all the other blurb.

Thanks for the advice guys! That would be very helpful Liam, cheers! :) If I can sell some bats, then I could afford a premier with a Ti grill. It would be nice to get an Ayrtek, something different. 8) Most likely going to be between the Ayrtek and Masuri, but I have heard that the chin strap is uncomfortable for some on the Ayrtek as it is too tight... :( Also Tom, do you have weights of both the premier and elite with a Ti grill you could post up? Thanks!

I'm an Ayrtek convert and love mine and wouldnt go back to any of the other brands, its starting to look a bit used now as ive had it a few seasons now so may send it off for a refurb at the end of the season should Tom be willing to look after me again, agree about the raw edition though.

I used my Ayrtek for the first time since I got it today for keeping, after previously using an albion to keep which was my old lid, it felt so so much better, it's a lot lighter, the vision is better, and I got hit a few times in the grille, as I was keeping on a minefield! Glad I got the cash together to get an ayrtek!
