Hi.. I need some help here. I bought this new CA12000 Plus bat at a great deal, took off the stickers ( in hindsight i regret it) , and gave it one good coat and then a light one , before knocking in the bat for about an hour. Now i see some wood peeling off, along one of the grains . The photos might help make sence of what i am saying. I need to know what went wrong? Did i knock it in too hard, or is it underoiled? Pls.  suggest how to fix this? Would fibreglass tape help? Thanks in advance.

cant fix that mate, its just grain openings, nothing to worry about, I am told that it is the sign of a good bat, i would suggest putting a scuff sheet on it

Its fine mate, one of my bats did that but plays beautifully. Put on a scuff sheet but use the clear one as the fiber ones are horrible. Also if you ever decide to remove the scuff sheet you will just need to be extra careful to not feel wood off.

I use a hairdryer on the scuff sheet if I remove it! It heats the glue up so that it doesn't rip any splinters out!
Do it gradually and be patient to do one area at a time, even if it takes 10 minutes to remove the sheet, so don't rush it!!!!

Hi Sumanth,

Don't worry, this is perfectly normal.  Surface cracks of some description appear on about half of the natural faced bats we knock in.  If you keep a natural face, you will most likely get surface cracks in your very first net session.  This kind of peeling along the grain usually means that this particular grain has been knocked in sufficiently, and you should move on to other parts of the bat.  If you get all the grains on the face peeling like that, it's actually a sign that the bat has been knocked in well, but you need to be careful not to do too much more knocking in in that particular area of the face once the peeling appears, as you can cause damage to the bat.

If you want to get rid of them, you could try and sand them down (assuming they are small enough) and then knock in the sanded down area afterwards, or apply a scuff sheet, as the others have suggested.  Hope this helps.

Fear not! :D
I can give you tips from my personal experience, that will make your bat bing crazy!

YOu, need to get your self down to pound store and buy some sand paper.
Then, sand the face clean! The cracks will become very very insignificant.
They are an indication that the grains are opening up and the bat is doing the businesses.

Then, after sanding it down, apply a clear hammer edge sheet.
And believe me the newly sanded surface will have crazy bing.
Make sure you play 20 odd overs in the nets are slow pace.

And believe me you will notice the difference, I have the same approach and have applied it to about half a dozen of my own personal bats. Never ever had a problem, in fact people ask me why my bats tend to ping so much.  8)

in my opinion i find when this happens the bat has been allowed to dry out too much at some stage, yes you may have added oil but too late and the face starts to split along the grain lines.

Fairly easy to sort though get a mouse sander and sand it down using 3 differing grades to get it smooth and once complete give it 3 coats of oil over a week and they allow to fully dry.

Once its fully dry then add a scuff sheet and oil every 6 months via the back of the bat, i also find this happens more on bats with antiscuff covers than bats without but as ive said thats because its been allowed to dry out too much.
