Bat clicking? broken handle?
« on: August 17, 2012, 08:35:33 AM »

Right guys I have a slight issue with my first every bat, its a GN Powerbow roughly 7 years old but in lovely condition
Over the past year or 2 of light usage i've started to notice a slight click, coming from the handle area when i wave the bat. It only happens once, then if i bounce a ball o the face, and wave it again after it clicks once again. its not a very loud, but noticeable and possibly has got worse. Now i dont use the bat much anymore, because i have others and dont want to make it worse, but it goes really well so i want to be able to use it.

I read on here a while back someone mentioned they had a similar issue, and people responded that it may be the handle and the glue between springs has come loose which then causes the click. But i feel the click is coming from the bottom of the handle, and therefore maybe has something to do with the joint between the handle and bat. I feel that underneath the top stickers where this joing is, there may be a split or slight crack developing, but the stickers will be difficult to remove and dont want to risk making a mess of the bat. What are peoples views or any advice would be grateful as i know very little regarding handles. Would it be ok to just carry on using the bat which may make it worse, but also give myself a better idea of the actual problem, so can then get it repaired properly?

Regards

I'd take it to a shop like vantage, ayrtek anyone who can re handle and stuff and ask them on there opinion then if it is a new handle get them to do it or send it to gray nicolls and get it stickerd up again

unless you have access to a splicing jig to cut both new handle and blade, a handle and a decent means to cut it (bandsaw, table saw etc) i wouldnt attempt it yourself.

at the risk of sounding stupid, is it not quite as simple as removing the handle by using a saw for example? and replacing it with another from an old bat?

you can remove the handle using a power saw but by hand will take a long time and probably not accurate enough, you will need a new handle though as the handle from older bat might come out smaller than the V you have cut into this bat leaving you with 2 unusable bats..

I replaced a handle on a bat over the winter without any experience or knowledge but we used a circular saw to remove the broken handle, purchaced a new handle online and then had to thin it a bit to fit in glue + clamp, once that was done used a hand plane to even it out but lot of effort went into it...was worth it as it was an expensive bat that was only a season old and was dear to me...

No. Most brands who handle themselves could use different sized splices/ different angles. By cutting them out you would also loose some of the wood making it difficult to fit. Really not an easy job without the right bits and pieces. In my experience matching up and handling a new blade can be difficult. Most need a little tweak To ensure a snug fit

To rehandle a bat you will need to cut all of the cane out of the bat and then fit a new larger handle. Yes it may sound simple but it really is not, I have done a handful now and it really takes some getting used to and expert help as fitting handles is one of the hardest parts of batmaking
