i use a bat to score runs not lean on and pose with whilst at the crease or for people to pick up and be impressed by whilst sat waiting to go into bat whilst not knowing how it performs.

If a bat had 20mm egdes but went like a tramp on chips id be more than happy!

I love you gumbo!  ;)

so all edge and no spine by using a flat face?

I have a 3lb 5oz bat which is dwarfed interms of size by a 2lb 10 MH Distinction ........ but the edge on the 3' 5oz is massive

No. Take a standard "7mm curvature" faced bat. With a normal profile. Plane that curvature off the front off the face, and spine and edges haven't changed position, but the bat has a flatter face. That's essentially what you are doing with pressing with a flat roller.

Madness if it affects the performance of the bat in my view.

i don't agree, the edges will be the same, but the spine hight will be reduced by 5mm, in the "2mm versus 7mm" gm version, as the spine hight is measured from the center of the face, not the edge..

Depends on what we are using as the datum though.

what it seems to do is weaken the middle, to some extent. It does give the batmaker the option of increasing edge size/reducing weight. Same volume of wood is used, just placed differently.

and what's all this stuff about 1.5oz heavier or something on the F2? I find it very odd we have to guess all this stuff on forums and read photos on twitter at a 90 degree angle.

I'd think that a convexing roller would compresses the outside edges more than the middle where as a flat roller will compress consistently across the whole face.

If the flat faced bat was compressed to the same height as the middle of the convex faced bat then the edges would be bigger. If it were compressed to the same height as the edge of the convex faced bat then the edges would be the same.

If this is accurate, and flat faced bats have bigger edges, then they do so because the edges are not compressed as much as a convex faced bat. Possibly one reason why they seem to be more susceptible to cracking.

When a ball hits your bat off center the force of the impact pushes one side causing the bat to twist. A convex faced bat should lessen the twisty feeling because the ball has slided off the rounded face, the drawback being the ball has slided off the rounded face and now isn't going where you intended it.
