I agree, Uzair! I don't think they gave the Halo a fair shot either (just one year!)

I agree with you.

I had always thought Flare got them good market, quite surprising moves by GM this year

It was no real surprise that the Flare was discontinued to be honest, it had been out for a few years - especially as watson wasn't using it anymore I guess sales dropped a bit.

A few people I knew who were going to get flares opted for icons instead since they pick up so well.

that's a point, for such a high middled bat the flare's didn't pickup too well.

Agree with you there, not the best balanced bat I have picked up.

Do you think this is mainly down to the concaving, then? They both have high middles, but the Icon is, of course, concaved, unlike the Flare - perhaps a good example that this theory about concaving aiding pick-up is actually true?

Not sure its purely about the concaving issue, its just that the Icon does pick up exceptionally well whereas the Flare picks up like a lump of wood (which, to be fair, is pretty much what it is!)

as clear as mud - what I mean is, the design of the Flare is such that by common consensus it picks up like a railway sleeper, so it is not simply a case of the Icon being concaved making the big difference!

I have a pet theory that bats with higher spines pickup better. The Flare is a fairly chunky edged bat, similar to a higher middled Tendulkar bat. Whereas your standard Icon has more modest edges but a little more of a spine thanks to the concaving.

possibly true - I have an alternate theory that convex bats such as the Flare pick up badly!

Theory goes that the more wood running down the line of the hands/handle the better. Putting wood towards the edges means weight is further "off centre" and the bat feels heavier than it should. Same reason a low middle bat feels worse to pickup than a high middled bat - the majority of wood has been moved down the blade away from your hands. I had a scoop for a while and couldn't get the hang of the pickup at all, just didn't feel right, that's the ultimate edge bat. Likewise, I have a GM Icon+ which weighs 2'10 and recently purchased a bat with a bigger edges/less spine/lower middle and though it weighs 2'7 the pickup isn't much different. I'm sure somebody will slap me down for this logic but I'm probably more fussy than some about pickup.

nah, your logic seems reasonable enough as it goes.
