Your valued opinion...
« on: September 06, 2012, 07:52:21 PM »

We thought this was the right place to come for a bit of market research....

For Wisden's 150th Anniversary next year, we are either:

1.   producing a run of Wisden 150 Limited Edition bats, numbered 1-150. The bats will be hand made by Mike Hawk, and although they will be suitable for playing cricket at the highest level, we anticipate the majority of owners will keep theirs under lock and key, well away from the cricket field.
The bats will cost £395, or £525 in a framed presentation box.

OR

2. producing commemorative bats, full size (but not playable), framed in a presentation case

These bats will prob cost about £250

What would your reaction be? Which would you go for? Would you put your name down for one? Do you know other people who would be interested? If so, in which category?

I don't seem to be able to insert images at the moment, DM me your email address.

Cheers

I would think about who the target audience is a bit more and do a cross between bats a grandfather would buy for his grandson to use, and the bat in a box with nice lazer etching.

what is the demographic of wisden readers and match the product accordingly.

it maybe that a leather bound wisden would be a better option...

Who really cares about the Wisden anniversary to buy a bat?

Wisden is all about the book, not bats. So as Buzz said, a leather bound wisden is maybe the better option

Yeh agreed as only a few rich people will buy a bat for £350+ to be in a cabinet unless it's being used by a pro or is a pro bat. Leather bound annual maybe ?

Really? £395 for a handmade bat? You're either getting ripped off or marking them up far too highly? And if they're not really intended for use, why use the best willow???

The bat concept is an idea, but that price tag is far too high for me (ok, so if it was £150 including a frame I probably still wouldn't buy one, since it's not really my style)

As a point of reference I believe James Cornford made a limited edition run of bats using wood from the tree that was cut down at Canterbury. Maybe contact him to find out how many were made, how many we're sold and also how much for.

Yeah, I quite like the idea of a leather covered book. Maybe even made in the theme of a cricket ball, with a seam running down either the spine of the front and back of the book with gold imprint, such as "MMC regulated" or whatever it normally says on cricket balls. Maybe even throw in some wool and cork into the construction of the spine or something, I feel that would be special! Perhaps even a limited edition 150th Anniversary cricket ball! I think a bat for that much which isn't going to be used is a bit too expensive! I have honestly never read the Wisden, but may invest on a 150th Anniversary copy!

the display bats may be a good idea for clubs and a couple of the more affluent individuals. Could you get them signed by some former Wisden players of the year to give them a bit more value? Like the idea of a book
