ho hum...would be very surprised by that one.  Glad we signed Brooks, even if I would have preferred Harris but Plunkett...whilst he is a Tyke and therefore welcome, Im not sure where we would use him!

Of course not! Just a strange strategy. I'm not saying it's the players' fault for taking the cash.

I see both sides of that - Surrey do not have a genuinely top class wicket taking spinner (Batty is good for blocking up an end but has no great strike rate in FC cricket) and have tended to go for overseas options over the past few years, which have usually tended to be available for a few weeks then off again.  Keedy is a quality bowler and, with sensible treatment, will have two to three seasons of FC cricket left in him (less convinced he'll last that long if he plays all the hita nd giggle stuff).  So he is a reliable part of their team for a period of time.

For Keedy I suspect it was more than just the paycheck - at Lancashire he was second pick to Simon Kerrigan and possibly also behind Steve Parry.  At Surrey he'll play most every game.

I also believe the ECB's stance on awarding grants based on the number of players under 28? and qualified for england probably had a bearing on Lancashire's decision.

The problem with many decent spinners is they don't mature until late 20's/early 30s. If Surrey have 2 young spinners then it could be years before they are ready.

billy Godleman to Derby. Could be a good signing. What a talent when he was younger, hopefully he can find some form there and start making big runs!

Derby, whilst lucky to go up and to do so as CXhampions, played some good cricket last year and have the opportunity next season to give lie to the assumption that the smaller counties should be allowed to wither and die.  Godleman could be a part of that.

Wainwright was a good buy, never got a proper go at Yorks.

It's something Essex use to be good at, picking up players other counties didn't want and getting more out of them. Irani was one such example.

Aunty was indeed a good pick up for Derbyshire - he was a really wholehearted gutsy performer for Yorkshire and the vast majority of fans were sorry to see him go, even whilst accepting that it was probably for the best given that we had Rashid, Rafiq and several youngsters on the books.  He turned in some really excellent performances in crucial situations for us, but his bowling tailed off a bit after a winter witht he England Lions - now how often do you hear that?
