Spent the afternoon in the garden and this was the result! (especially for Buzz)

I bought a part made off Peplow a while back, and then acquired a few tools, but in the midst of (quite literally) waiting for paint dry, I thought I'd pop out into the garden and try and fashion it into something more bat like.

Starting issue was no workbench and vice, but the patio table, a g-clamp and a 12mm pine and I was able to fashion something to hold the bat comfortably in place.

The tools I had to start with are a drawknife, spokeshave, belt and orbital sanders, sanding block and sand paper, and a couple of flat planes... as shown below. And yes, the spokeshave did split in two as I was attempting to separate the body to sharpen it. Also critical was the diamond sharpening block that was well used...



Anyway, what I created weighs in at 2lb13 and I would really like to get my hands on a round bottomed plane just to take a little out of the toe and shoulders, and maybe do a spot of concaving on the back. Here's a few pictures so you can see what my three hours work created...

Complete with obligatory biscuits and celebratory beer...

Very similar to the old Insignia profile - tried to extend the spine up towards the handle, crossed with a ridgeback... It's got a ridge running along the spine!

Maybe. What I learned today is that the pressing is what is most important. Positioning the swell manages where the centre of percussion (or the point where you get fewest vibrations) is. Good fun though!

Took this to my match this afternoon and tried it in the net. It flies, although it weighs a ton. After the match, I left it lying around and one of the oppo picked it up and commented on liking the profile. I explained I'd made it and they were impressed. One of the kids wanted to have a go and asked where to get a cleft.

We also had a chat about the hades. Andy you'll probably be getting a calk from someone wanting a junior hades. They were very impressed with mine!
