Back pain whilst batting
« on: September 21, 2012, 08:52:34 AM »

Greetings forumites,

As the name suggests, I get pack pain whilst batting on the lower left side of my back.
I'm 16 and relatively tall, about 6'2-3 and experience a fair bit of back pain. I bend my knees a fair bit to relieve stress on my back, but what else can I do?

Pilates, yoga & regular stretching to loosen up your body. Also if your 16 your bones etc are still growing this can be painful at times.

Bowl 15 consecutive overs as fast as you can.

Won't stop the pain, but will make you grateful that you only batting.

Might have to take up yoga, haven't done it since I was about 5 and only did it because I thought it was called 'Yoda'! I have only netted against a balling machine so far this season, so it could just be that!

Does hurt though.

concentrate on your posture, you should have a straight back, bent at your hips.
you might need to stand up taller.

As Buzz says. Also, bear in mind that you don't *have* to tap your bat on the ground...

All good bit of advise, thank you!

I think I will have to do a bit of video analysis in order to see how I stand and that.

I also quite like tapping my bat, but shall keep it in mind, thank you

I had the same Issue at 16/17, tried changing my stance but didn't really work so I just bought a Long blade bat, minor alteration to stance and voila. I'm nearly 19 now and have grown another inch and a half and my back's absolutely fine unless I face the bowling machine without any time to rest.
Might be worth a try if the yoga and change of stance doesn't help although obviously they should be tried first. Hope that helps

If you are sitting most of your time , your hamstring muscles tighten up and would also lead to back pain. I had the same problem especially during the nets. It would do you good if you could regularly stretch both hamstring and back gently as they work in unison.

I thought that could be an option Ponting! Yet an expensive one...

Sitting down just throughout the day? Shall take that on board.

Try and use a longer blade bat so that you can stand a little straighter when batting.
Plus this means that if you automatically tap your bat, then this should be more confortable for that too!

Toby. I think you just have a bad back. At 16 you are still growing so this is common  Work on you core strength rather than your batting stance would be my advice.
