Had a lengthy discussion with a few ECB physios and current pro players over the weekend about this and people getting sconned at both pro and club level.

Top edges cannot be foreseen or avoided unless you have superman like reactions! More people take on bouncers due to wearing a lid but if they get it wrong they pay the price and wear one.

If u saw a bouncer coming without a lid would you take it on or hit the deck and duck it? At the end of the day after the weekend the majority of us have a job to go back and do to earn a living...this could be difficult if seriously injured.

tom you are a hypocrite!

as you do not wear a lid haha

i think it boils to when we were kids playing, helmets werent compulsory but i think it is an excellent idea that all under 18's have to wear helmets, i think it should be extended to all batsmen, similar to shin pads in footy.

Myself, i never used to wear a lid even after being hit in the head on a few occasions, messing up my teeth and on another occasion breaking my jaw.

However i deceided to don a helemt after moving up a few levels, i sat for 3 motnhs in my house watching tv with it on just to get used to it ... i have even wore it in the bedroom after a special request from a lady!!!

Ironically i have never been hit in 5 seasons since wearing one.

I can go quite easily without wearing shin pads in Football.
Lad said yesterday he'd forgotten his, so without thinking offered mine up.

It's only recently I have started due to the advances in shin pads, never used to like the feel, you always knew they were there. Nowadays they are very light weight.

Yet another reason to buy one.

Q: 'Were you having unprotected sex sir?'
A: 'No, I was wearing my batting helmet...'  :D

Last Saturday I was playing like an midget and was trying to sweep the first ball of leg spinner. Surprisingly the ball got extra bounce (don't know how) and I got top edge onto chin then grill. Thank God that I always wear a chin strap otherwise it would have done some damage.

I was having some discussion with Tom on Twitter on Saturday over this.

People overlook good helmet due to price but little do they realize it is one off (or long term) invest unlike a 400 quid bat.

There is this guy in my club who is very proud and confidently says he has never worn a box and played cricket. He is a young lad, 19 I suppose. I tried explaining him in amiable manner but then he never took it importantly. I told him, it will take just one delivery, but he is being stubborn lol. I don't wish to be mean nor I intend too but then I hope he learns a lesson sooner or later, I remember in summer I got hit by a tape ball and i couldn't stand for next five minutes so may God protect him lol

Then there was this guy who is left hand batsman but wears right hand pads, he worn them throughout the season. Then due to lack of side protection he got hit one or two times by me, later he had massive bruise. Not my fault that you were wearing wrong pads, its not that anyone in UK or Canada can't afford proper pads, anyone even on government funding can afford it.

Sorry for that rant :/

After snapping my shin pads in one game, I will never play a game without them, however friendly the game maybe.

I'll be honest, what has got me thinking is the possibility of top edging it into my face rather than being bounced to death. I've seen it happen and you always sort of think, well it won't happen to me. But, only last season, similar scenario, slightly different result, had a mow at a high full toss from a slow bowler and bottom edged it onto my stumps - when I think about it, I could just as easily have top edged it...

very rarely don't wear one.

heard to many stories from misty eyed old men recounting the time where they top edged a slow bowler in to their chevy chase.

helmets will become more and more frequent as the current generation, for whom it was compulsory to wear one as a youth, grow old.

Agree totally that you should always wear a lid.

Was standing up to the stumps on a low, slow wicket, no lid. Never even considered getting hit in the face whilst keeping before, assumed my hands would do their job and catch the ball. Considered a helmet necessary to prevent damage from someone's bat cracking my head, as i trusted my reflexes (and the opposition) i didn't think this was going to happen.

Opposition were on the ropes but a real limpet of a number 9 was batting well, leaving everything possible to try and see out the remaining overs to prevent us from having 60 odd overs to chase down 90. He was really getting his front pad out there, really planting it a long way down and getting his hands in the air. One ball turned a fair bit further than previous deliveries and flicked up off the top of his pad right into my face.

Fractured my front tooth just above the gumline. I bent it back into place and finished the game, then went to hospital, where they fixed it into place temporarily and suggested i went to the dentist asap.

Nearly 6 months, and 3 dentist trips later, i had a £400 bill for root canal work which will keep my tooth intact for a maximum of 10 years. After it disintegrates i'll need a titanium implant replacement tooth, and i'll be lucky to get change out of a grand.

Helmet costs what, roughly £100? Don't take the risk.

Good job you have invested in optimum protection going forward to keep that titanium tooth in place ;)

You cannot account for the unknowns which there are a great deal of in the wonderful world of cricket
