Salix bats
« on: November 29, 2012, 08:04:42 AM »

I just received my new Salix stick.
I'm about to prepair it, but does it need oiling ? I reckon that they have used there bat wax on the bat.

When we knock in Salix bats we usually will put a coat of oil on them, just to be on the safe side, but you could get away with not doing it because they wax all their bats before sending them out to the shops, and that's one of the reasons why the finishing is so beautiful!

Out of interest, which one did you get? I use a Praestantia Performance and it's been, by far, the best bat I've ever had before...

It depends, I would recommend scuffing it! As beautiful as the finish is on Salix bats, it is in the end a bat to be used, so the looks aren't guaranteed to be as nice after a few innings! You're safe in terms of performance though! 8)

If you're going to scuff it, I would recommend scuffing it before you knock it in! No need to oil, but it does save quite a few complications with scuffing the bat before, as it's a dent-free surface, so is much easier to put an anti-scuff on! Also means that knocking in takes slightly less time, and you can use it in the nets with old balls sooner!

I think they are waxed with a special wax compound which allows linseed oil to penetrate that layer and get into the wood, so it would be best to oil it if you're not going to scuff it!

Hope this helps

Thanks mate, i think I will go with oil and knock in only. Maybe put some tape on the edges.
I use to put scuff sheet on my bats, so with this bat, i'll try without scuff sheet and see how it goes.

I'm looking at getting a custom made bat made for next season (as I live in Perth I'll go visit the Bradbury factory), and I'm absolutely in love with the Salix Torque shape. Does anyone on here own one? If so, can they post a few pics, etc, and also give me a description of pick-up, weight, etc? I love the no concaving profile at the pack, and it also looks like it has thick edges and a reasonably high sweet spot.

Looks nice - interesting that it's slightly concave though - the Torques are usually convex.  But maybe to get the weight down to 2.9, they needed to concave it slightly.  From what I've seen, Torques are generally 2.10+

Cheers for that fromthehip, looks a beauty! Yeah Paul I saw your review of the Torque on YouTube and that is what's got me interested in that bat shape. Not a fan of concaving at all, although those pics show very minimal signs of it, which I could live with. You said for a 2.11 that it picked up well. I usually use 2.9 but if its a 2.10 that is well balances and picks up nicely then I'd go with it.
