2013 wisden cricketers of the year
« on: December 06, 2012, 12:39:45 PM »

I thought it would be interesting to see who we thought might get the nod for the next 5 wisden cricketers of the year.
We should remember that if someone has already won the award you can't have it twice! There is also usually a random county player picked!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wisden_Cricketers_of_the_Year#List_of_Cricketers_of_the_Year

My thoughts are
Dale Stein
Hashim Amla
Virat Kholi (one day performances have been astounding)
Saeed Ajmal
Nick Compton (County performances and Eng call up)

what do you think?

Amla has to be a shoe in (the other two great batsmen of the year, Clarke and Cook, have won it before) and I suspect that Steyn and Compton will be considered as well.

Ajmal might be hamstrung by his lack of impact on the English season, which is the theoretical marker.  In any event, I wonder if Vernon Philander might get that slot, given that he made such a remarkable start to his Test career and that he was influential in the Yarpies getting to number one....

Kohli, no.  If there were to be another overseas batsman, I reckon it would be Mike Hussey.  Done very well in tests in the last 12 months and has been very close to an award in the past.

If we go back to the county slot you've given to Compton, I reckon that they usually go for a key player from the champion county, which to my mind opens the door to Chris Wright being a surprise winner.

Finally, given their continued success, I wonder whether or not we might see another female winner.  Most probably Sarah Taylor?

Can't see past Amla. I'd like to think Wayne Madsen might be in with a shout for leading Derbys to a surprise D2 Championship.

Given the title of the thread, I'm voting for Jiminy and Chester...

Unlikely, as everyone knows Derbyshire were freakishly lucky not to finish second to the Mighty Yorkshire!

I thought it was judged on performances during the English summer?

Which would rule out Ajmal and Kohli

Compton is a dead cert I imagine

So possibly five from:
Amla
Steyn
Philander
Compton
Wright
Taylor

Not one England player from last Summer, oddly...

My argument stands - even coming second to 'north Derbyshire' would not have been predicted.

Not predicted, but no more surprising than Worcestershire going up the year before.  Besides, I think more credit attaches to the coach (Karl Krikken?) than to Madsen for this one.

Samuels possibly - not sure Sammy's impact on the English season though, unless we're instigating the John Abrahams award?

David Hughes or Chris Cowdrey...

Marlon didn't do badly early summer and he was the difference in the t20 wc final. Good shout. Clarke has had 1 treble and 2 double tons in 2011?

2012? You can only win the award once and I think he already has. Anyway he didn't play in England last summer did he?

Quote from Wisden -

The Five Cricketers of the Year are chosen by the editor of Wisden, and represent a tradition that dates back to 1889, making this the oldest individual award in cricket. Excellence in, or influence on, the previous English summer are the major criteria for inclusion as a Cricketer of the Year. No one can be chosen more than once
