How to buy a bat...
« on: December 24, 2012, 10:14:13 AM »

There are often questions about wanting bats and various things like, how big are the edges, whats the spine height, is it huge. While all these look great, I thought it would be worthwhile us having a thread for the various different suppliers of willow (crack) to explain how they think buyers can best approach purchasing willow to get the best from it.

Open forum then, Arvind, Asad, Paul, Kieron and Jake, as retailers, how would you suggest that buyers get the best of buying bats from you, both directly in the shop and also over "mail order"?

Batmakers, how would you recommend people go about it with you?

Firstly, I would always recommend coming in to our store to pick up a bat and have a play with it and tap it up etc. before parting with your hard earned cash for a brand new stick.  If you are unable to come to our shop, based abroad etc., then please do take a look at your YouTube videos as we record these mainly to help such consumers in their buying decisions.  As we take time out to explore pick-ups, ping tests and all the rest of it ie. grains, edge size as well, there's a lot of useful info in those videos, and in a lot of cases, the bat you're seeing in the video is the actual bat that's for sale at the time of your enquiry.

I would also recommend that buyers have a clear idea of how much they're willing to spend on a bat before they approach the retailer.  There's nothing worse than someone enquiring and asking for photos of an LE bat, and then asking for a "deal" or saying that they only have £100 to spend.  Taking actual photos of bats is something I will always want to do for the customer, but it does take up quite a lot of time and effort, so I'd suggest don't go as far as asking for photos until you have a pretty good idea of what you want and how much you're willing to spend.  Watch the video first, maybe read a review on here, as well as the specs on our website before going to the photos stage.  That would, ultimately, save everyone time.

The bats I've made for friends, I've let them come into my workshop so that they can test pickup/feel etc. That way, they get a bat that feels great for them and I can improve my knowledge base as to what people want.

Pick it up, mallet test it, tap a few balls up with it, have a slap in our net with a demo bat, if you've narrowed it down to 2 or 3 bats we'll usually let you take them into the net for a few throwdowns with each one.

If you cant come to the shop, and are ordering online or over the phone, then things are suddenly resting on my shoulders. I will generally send you pictures should you wish (and we will be launching a youtube channel soon to offer customers a further insight into how it taps up/plays) and give you my thoughts on pickup, how it taps up, etc, but still this is just my opinion. I've not had any complaints yet, but i'm sure my tastes can't suit everyone!

Basically, it is always best to pick up the bat yourself before purchasing. When this isn't possible though, the more information you can give to me about your requirements, then hopefully the more information i can return to you in terms of finding a suitable bat.
