The, I can't believe he's a test cricketer discussion.
« on: December 28, 2012, 03:15:55 AM »

Just a thread to talk about players who defy logic and make a international test team.
Coming from NZ I could go on all day about numerous players. But watching the Australia series at the moment I can't go past Nathan Lyon. Struggles against anyone but the tail.Struggles to turn it on a 5th day pitch, Cant bat, And gives send offs when he gets a tail ender out.
I reckon they should bring in that 39 year old guy from Adelaide.

Was just watching the test and thinking along the same lines. He really isn't that good.  What`s the left armer with the sweatband? He should get another run in the team. Is it Michael Beer?

Yeah, Doherty. He`s been looking good in the Big Bash. I know its a totally different format but he has looked alright. Better than Lyon, that`s for sure.

Sami was alright for awhile. I can remember him working the Aussies over.

Its just that with Australia's resources I refuse to believe a player like Lyon gets the nod. These days you have to be able hold to a bat if your not very good.

watching Lyon today for the 2 overs he bowled he did get hit for 16 but then he took the wicket on Prasad, the wicket was nothing special Prasad was trying to go for his hatrick of sixes and just lobbed it up for an easy catch. The first innings though his two wickets were the last two of the innings and neither of them quite spectacular but a wickets a wicket. I don't think his batting is that bad it just looks bad because Australia probably have the strongest tail in the world.

Gotta admit im no fan of Lyon. The bloke just seems to be a tad arrogant - an arrogance which isn't backed up sufficiently by his skills. I know any test wicket is something to cherish but he does act like a clown when he gets the tail out. Maybe he should listen to what some former test players have to say instead of rubbishing them. But heck he has a baggy green so must be doing something right :)

Thats what I mean though, How has he got a baggy green? Its been written about, the fact Aussie can't find a descent spinner. Against SA when they needed him to step up at Adelaide he did nothing.

Just to show I'm not just hating on Lyon, Cowan is lucky to be there.

Watson needs to give up bowling all together. As an opener Watson averaged 43 in around 20 or so innings. Now there was the issue of him not converting his half  centuries into centuries, but he still did much better than what Cowan has done. I've heard Ian Chappell say this before and is is very true - Players who average in the 30's in FC cricket are not going to do any better at Test level, which Cowan has shown.

Guptill? Williamson? Boult/Southee? Nott sure I agree with that assessment, I assume you mean Taylor and McCullum? But Williamson is class, that ton against SA was stuff dreams are made of. And Boult + Southee are a opening combo to rival the Aussie young quicks of the future, and if Bracewell can sort his act out and they can nail down a half decent spinner + seam bowling all-rounder (Todd Astle and Sam Wells? Heard good things about both...) then their bowling would be sorted.

Watson is only one brain away from being a great player.

Have to admit, its hard having a go at the Aussies when you come from NZ. I wish Hadlee still played.
