Since I have a day off and the wife is at work I thought the best way to spend the day would be to compare my Ayrtek pads and gloves with my Kooks! So, it's ayrtek elite gloves and premier pads vs kookaburra kahuna 1000 gear. Whilst that may sound unfair I'm using premier pads according to Ayrtek the premiers are the same spec as the elites and just have different styling. So, here are some photos:
Pad weights: Ayrtek:1089g. Kook: 1016g
Top hand glove weights: Ayrtek: 191g Kook: 242g
Both of the leg guards are top notch in build quality and it it very difficult to separate them. The Ayrteks are wider but the kooks have a thicker profile - both are very comfortable and offer an identical level of protection. The Ayrtek is the taller of the two pads by about and inch so if you are above 5' 9" (my height) the ayrtek's may well provide a better fit.
The gloves are where the real differences lie. The ayrtek gloves could be the love-child of a pair of 2013 GN legend and Mongoose Super Premium Gloves. The shark tooth construction lets the hand sit relatively straight but even though they are brand new they have an ease of flexibility. The gloves feel light on the hands and the level of protection on offer is reassuring.
The kooks feel weightier on the hand but not at the expense of being clumsy. They have flat edged segmented fingers that sit the hand at a curve. The level of protection on offer is excellent.
If you were ever to choose between the two I would say that the gloves will be the deciding factor - if you like your hands to feel light and quick then I'd say go Ayrtek, if you like a sturdier hand weight where you can feel the weight of your hands through the shot then I'd be inclined to go for the Kooks. Whichever one you choose you won't be disappointed.
