Embarrassing, absurd, funny on field moment?
« on: January 08, 2013, 03:03:30 PM »

I thought that with so many cricketers on here that this could be quite an entertaining topic, I'd imagine there would be a few good stories floating around...

I figured that I'd get the ball rolling with a recent occurrence.
In my second last game before the christmas break (aussie season). Opening the batting in a one dayer I was going along quite nicely, scoring pretty quickly. However being a hot day my gloves were getting quite sweaty, however as I only had one pair at the game :o I ignored this and kept batting. Clearly this was a bad decisions because an over later the opposition brought a spinner on and whilst attempting to hit him out of the park, my bat proceeded to fly out in the direction of the square leg ump!!
As I was busy watching my bat it took me a while to realise that I had been bowled!!
I walked off to the laughter and ribbing from my teammates, for 45...

Feel free to add any of your own cricketing moments....

rupturing my Achilles appealing from first slip. (the batsman smashed it but was given not out)

felt like I had been shot.

I copped a whole world of abuse (not least from my wife!)

At the end of my time at school, we went on tour to Barbados for 3 weeks. During a floodlit game at the 3 W's against Uni of West Indies, my mate who wasn't really a cricketer (was on the trip more for the Rum and the Sun) found himself on the boundary underneath the highest of high catches. In front of a crowd of probably 500, rather than attempt a catch, he volleyed it one bounce back to my gloves! The crowds erupted with laughter!

In my late teens, in the middle batting, somehow a wasp got into my trousers. I got stung, and I was trousers round my knees shooing the wasp away, much to the laughter of the opposition...

I've been back to Barbados since, and the hotel we stayed has my helmet which we all signed and left with them, on display in their bar. The barman was at that game and when i went back to see him 3 years ago he told the story to a big group of his regular local customers, they were crying with laughter!

Got to admit, but in one game I was called into the team about an hour before. I had told them I wasn't playing as it was a big night on the friday. So I got out of bed put whites on and headed to the ground, fielding first.

As the ball was thrown to me at mid-in I just looked at it in a haze, put the hands out missed for it to hit me in the baby maker. As only a couple of my team mates saw this, I quickly picked up the ball threw it to the bowler and gritted my teeth for a long time after.

A number of years ago. I was. Playing 3rd XI cricket however 1st XI were short so I got call-up(had played before as fielding was reasonable) as 2's were pushing for promotion we were playing Banbury Town with Neal Radford + co.

Batted 7 or 8 after decent start lost a few wickets so batted faced Radford ok, however overseas Craig Haupt was bowling spin I guided a few through slip(open face not edged). However then came down the track + placed for 2or 3 through covers when he decided to try + trip me up when turning.  When I asked boys if I should tell him I was. Playing against their 3rd team the week before(we weren't happy as separate teas for home + away

Why is someones misfortune or pain so funny?

Its more the way the injury occurred, rather than the injury itself that makes its comical.
No one likes getting injured, and achilles can be terrible, but getting injured whilst appealing makes a story.

Played in a game and our quickie hit their opener straight in the tabs. The guy on the floor had apparently forgot his box! The ball strike actually split one knacker in two and his sack was the size of a baseball within seconds!
A lot of the people you play with seem to get hit in the jewels... :D

I played with a guy who often likes to the tell the story of how steamed dimmies and fielding don't mix...
During the tea break this bloke didn't like anything the club had put on so decided to just hold out, however giving into the hunger he bought a few steamed dimmies with soy sauce. To his dismay the tea break ended right after the purchase, but determined to get his fill he stuck the bag in his pocket thinking "I'm fielding at fine leg, I'll have plenty of time to eat these, the ball will never come to me"
2 balls later the batsmen skys one to the fine leg region so forgetting the dimmies he sprints and attempts a diving catch only to experience a searing pain....
The bag of dimmies had burst!! smashing pipping hot soy sauce and dim sim all along his leg, he spent the remainder of the day on the sideline with an icepack strapped to his leg.
An awkward moment at the time, but now is one of his go to stories on boring game days  :)

We were top of the league, and needed a win to help take away from second place. It was a massively right game, and one of our quicks bowled the last over they needed two to win off the last ball. He bowled a yorker and it was hit back to him, he picked it up was about 2 yards away from the stumps and threw it straight past the stumps and they ran a three! One of the funniest things I've ever seen but was obviously absolutely devastating at the time!
