Played as a guest for a side in Liverpool against an over 40s/50s countys side. I'd been bigged up by the bloke that invited me to play, excellent batsman, reasonable spinner etc. We batting first, I went in with 4 or 5 overs left, nicked the first ball, dropped by the keeper, bowled the next ball. Then got hit for the biggest six I've ever seen whilst bowling and bowled 3 overs for about 35. Needless to say I dropped a catch as well. To say I was embarrassed would be an understatement I felt like a complete and utter idiot, I don't think I'll get asked to go there and play a guest game again!

Happens an awful lot...

Worst thing was Tim, the batsmen was only half way down the wicket

One of the funniest for me was when we played in Jamaica against the Jamaica Defence Force Pro40 side. We bowled first and in the blazing early afternoon heat, the Captain tosses the ball to our oldest bowler and says "You can Open". Now he likes to think he has a bit of pace, but in reality it's more like ver, very slow medium Right Arm. The two JDF guys have walked out, helmets on, expecting rapid and short.

First ball he bowls is in the slot and nice and slow. The opener picks it, straight back over his head and out of the ground for six and a lost ball. To add insult to injury, both batsmen walk off to remove their helmets and get their caps as the umpires get a new ball... Much to the mirth of everyone else on the field...!

We still had 5 more tour matches left. Guess who didn't open the bowling again, or live it down, ever...

Having made a return to cricket after a twenty year break at the tender age of 52 years I knew that I would need to stretch and warm up a bit more than the youngsters in the side.

I didn't want to let myself down keeping wicket. That wasn't the problem, one game where we batted first I pulled both thigh muscles in the space of two overs. Was even sledged by the umpire for slow running between the wickets, ooh the pain in my thighs.

Recover from that and a month later warmed up and stretched again, this time opened the batting and pulled a calf muscle going for a slow single in the first over, the pain was excruciating.

This season I'm not going to warm up cos it does me more harm than good.

Now where did I put the deep heat spray :)

Playing a fair few years ago, in problys my first season of senior cricket. I was trying to impress the Captain. I remember the ball was tucked behind square to me where i then decide i would launch the ball at the stumps to try and run out the batsman, it justs missed the stumps with the batsman short of his ground, But the ball then hit a foothole. It comically spooned over the Captains head as he wasdiving and falling after the ball and went for 4 overthrows.

This is when the barrage of abuse from the Captain started haha, i think the rest of my team seen the funny side of it...

We had our first net of the winter last saturday, and one of the guys batting kept getting hit on the thigh and complaining that it is hurting a lot...we kept asking if he was wearing a thigh pad and he said yes (he wanted to practise the glance)...anyways after the net he walked off and when he started removing he gear his thigh pad was his right leg, he also bats right handed...

He still doesn't know why his thigh pad didn't offer any protection  :o, what good is remfry or stretton fox or anyother thigh pad if you don't know how to use them  ;)...we will be aiming for the thigh again Feb 2nd :D.....btw this guy plays regular cricket might just have been a bad mental day for him...

:D We had something similar a long time ago in junior cricket where the batsman had went into the net taken his guard but was actually standing there with his helmet on backwards! :P

Hah, some of these stories are bringing back some memories for me.

My last ever U15 game for my club, we were playing some local rivals. The game was all but won, we had 3 overs to get a lad who had never played cricket before out. He was just making up the numbers for his mate who was the captain.

He strolled out with typical non cricketer swagger. The umpire asked if he needed a guard. He grabbed his groin area and replied with: 'got one mate'

Our bowler started to run in, but aborted and decided to go around the wicket instead. The umpire informed the batsman, who stood puzzled for a moment, before switching his hands around, and then turning his whole body to bat left handed!

We fell about in hysterics, the umpire gave up trying to explain it to him and allowed play to continue. He took a huge heave at it and amazingly made a decent connection but was caught on the boundary.

Took a bit of extra refreshment out with me when we were fielding after tea.

Wasn't really concentrating at gully, and a catchable ball thudded into my upper arm and onto the deck.

The reason: I was sneaking a crafty bourbon out of my pocket when I saw the bowler in his delivery stride - instead of dropping it and going into the crouch, I panicked and tried to shove the biscuit back into my whites, my hand got stuck in the pocket, the batsman inevitably snicked it and I looked a chump!

i was bowling at a tailender ... last ball of the game ...

the mood is set.

i run in ...

i bowl :D

the tailender sticks his bat in front of the ball and it rolls towards me at a dismal pace

and the idiot decides to start running

me in my ecstatic joy at my luck pick up the ball and run at the wicket to smash those scurvy scallywags down !

but ...

i manage to hit the wicket with my left hand instead of my right hand (which held the ball)

i had no idea what to do as everyone was screaming at me to hit the wicket with the ball

so i tried to root the wicket back in the ground and strike it down again

but i couldnt put the wicket in :(

the captain put me out of my misery and hits the wicket for me :')

lucky for me the batsman saw the wickets fall and had already walked back to the pavilion already thinking he was out :D

overall it was a pretty sordid affair.

If the bails are off pull a stump out the ground while you're holding the ball and the batsman is out ^_^
