Millichamp, Original Low, Solution & Solution mk 2
« on: January 10, 2013, 06:27:10 PM »

As you probably already guessed I'm a big millichamp fan but there is one thing I can't understand about the current range.
Last Year M&H discontinued the "S6" as I believe it no longer conforms to the laws of cricket due to the blade comprising of 2 different types of wood. They brought out a replacement called the "Original Low" which on there website is described as follows.

"New for 2012. In the familiar low shape made popular by the discontinued S6 bat - now in the Original guise. Designed to allow the compact modern batter to maximize efficiency on a slow, low English wicket."

The difference between the "Original Low" and the "S6" is that there are no holes drilled in the back making it to me, identical to the "Solution".

As with most M&H bats yo have the option to buy in standard or MK2 which I believe is just the grade of the willow used. But as you can see, there is quite a large gap in the price difference between the 2 bats they currently sell.
Does anyone know why this is?

Solution              £300
Solution Mk 2       £250
Original Low         £200
Original Low Mk2   £150

Probably because the Original has always been seen as the entry level one

I'm sure i asked Paul at IJC this question a while back and he had an answer but i cant quite remember what it was. Think it may have been to do with the grading....

Solution is made from G1 but graded higher due to less blemishes, etc. Solution Mk2 is a G2.  Original low is G1 but will have visible blemishes in comparison to a solution, original low mk2 is G2.  From what I've read and heard, they are graded on cosmetics, other than that the bat shapes are identical.  I suppose there is a performance gain associated with blemish free bats but I have no first hand knowledge between those two bats.  I think their Mk2's offer substantial value since they perform almost the same but a little easier on the wallet.  I have Distinction mk2 and it's the best bat I ever had.

Are the Originals still made in Taunton?
I'm not insinuating anything just wondered if they came with a 'Made in England' sticker?

One could also say that the Harlequin and Original High are essentially same shape.

From a business POV, you're not always going to get lovely clefts in - so even though the original low/solution/s6 are all basically the same shape, I believe it's a way for their not so deemed G1 willow to be sold.

Profile on the Solution has changed somewhat, I have a 2011 model that the edges are more traditional. The middle is low like the pictures, Have to say I prefer the one I have. Think I have some pics on my photo bucket still...

Quite heavy bats due to the low middle, if your looking for a bat for 3 years theses are great
