Can you test whether it's English or Kashmir willow?
« on: January 13, 2013, 03:54:46 PM »

Hi all

I've searched for this on here and cannot see anything, so apologies if it has come up.

Is there any way to tell whether a bat is English or Kashmir willow?

I am aware that Kashmir is generally heavier, harder and darker but I cannot tell with my untrained eye and nothing Kashmir to compare against.

Your advice will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

As far as I know from having a Kashmir bat, the grains are a lot fainter/ not as defined as an ew bat

I've yet to see a Kashmir you ouldn't pick with teh naked eye - the grains tend to be all over the place and the contrast between grains and the willow beteen completely different to an english willow bat

another myth the heavier / harder thing as with all things natural it will depend

As people have said the grain is fuzzier due to the growing conditions

And its a different tree

I was under the impression that they are the same species just grown in different regions. English in England and Kashmir in .... Wait for it... Kashmir .. And different soils, temperatures, and growing conditions give it different properties... But hey what do I know

Yup, EWNI or Kashmir as we also know it is often shipped baby trees from the UK to India.

As Tim says, some companies sell "EWNI" (English Willow Nurtured in India) as distinct from Kashmir Willow and say that it is English Willow seed taken and planted in Kashmir.  There is a difference, but due to the growing conditions in India, it will be far inferior to English Willow grown in England.

Often, you'll see a "double grain", ie. a wider grain, then a narrow grain which is almost grey in colour ... then wide, then narrow

A yard isn't really enough. You need to have the appropraite soil and water course. For English willow, sodden ground is very important.
