Sarah Taylor to play for Sussex
« on: January 14, 2013, 01:31:06 PM »

Any thoughts on this?

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/jan/14/england-cricketer-sarah-taylor-mens-match

I know that England cricketer Arran Brindle was the first female to score a century in an men's ECB Premier Division (albeit the Lincs Prem, which is generally regarded as pretty weak) - I thin kthis could be good for the game and I hope she gets a shot and does well.

Can anyone work out what shot she's trying to play in the action shot in thei article though?

Yeah it's pretty garbage as far as ECB leagues go, but a ton is a ton mate! Erm I'd assume it would be some sort of swat to leg?

Can't be allowed to happen. How can a county bowler bowl a bouncer at a woman, they can't - she will end up getting hurt.

i think its down to her choice, she knows the dangers and it could happen in the womans game. Good luck to her, she hits it very hard!!

I dont think its right

And surely Sussex could find a male keeper if needed at short notice from their youth set-up or even local league. I dont think she would be good enough both batting and keeping wise, not at all. I'd fancy myself to do a better job than her, does that mean I will get a call up?

She is a very capable keeper, and one of the leading batswoman in the game. She'll hold her own I'm sure!!

This. I've watched her bat live a few times. She is utter class. And her keeping is fantastic, she'll be fine.

I think it's brilliant and she will hold her own as a keeper no problem.

I have watched a lot of women's cricket over the last few years and the standard of fielding and batting is superb. The fast bowling is not quite there but it will come.

My daughter is currently being coached by ex England player Caroline Atkins as part of the Somerset EPP. She is a fantastic player and played for Taunton st Andrews 2nds last year in the wepl. She scored plenty of runs including a hindered. That 2nd x1 wepl is better than most play on here.

The coaches at Sussex must think she is good enough so I think it's fantastic for women's crickets and could be the break through.

Clearly not mate, just because you think your better than her, doesnt mean anyone else does!

Ive seen her play about 10 times id say, and her batting for a woman is incredibly powerful and she obviously has a lot of skill with the bat and gloves! It says a lot for the way the womans game is progressing that it is being considers, and says a lot about the mentality of some people that just because she is a woman we shouldnt let her play!

whats the difference between her keeping in the county 2's game or the 14 yr old that yorkshire used a season or two ago? (think it was yorks). if anything she is probably stronger, fitter and better equipped to play at that level than he was. no matter what we think i doubt very much there are any better players on here let alone in the county 2's/ higher league cricket than her. good luck to her and i hope she does really well.

You would also hope that a county 2's bowler would want to be in the headlines for getting her out and not knocking her head off!

it was a tongue in cheek comment Ciaran
Do we think she would be ok against the quicker bowling? more aggressive bowling such as short pitched stuff? and the quicker bowling when she is keeping, a slightly bigger ball. it would be a big step up for her. I have no doubt she is world class in the womens game.

I just dont see how she would be a better option than anyone else available at sussex

Got to say that anyone on here that says she doesn't deserve a chance really needs a long hard look at themselves and basically sort themselves out.

What a great opportunity and great moment for the sport, I hope there is more that get the chance.

She is absolute quality with the gloves and just because she doesn't smash the ball out the ground and is probably better that most county players at miniupating (no jokes please) the field.

I just hope that she can handle the extra pace, but them again just because the women may not be as strong as the men I doubt this has any restrcition on her reactions which means there shouldn't be a problem really.

You don't exactly see anyone getting bounced out in Womens cricket, but even if thats to with the pace of the bowlers it means they can handle the pace they bowl and more.

At 2nd XI level she's not exactly going to get 90mph bouncers coming down so don't see why she should fail

At the end of the day there are still the odd few keepers around county level that are outright keepers of which Taylor is probably as good if not better so don't see why some people above think that by the sounds of it she is expected to score a ton every match or she is no good

She would probably nail it better than most of us mate...seems a bit of a harsh comment
