How can something that hurts so much can be so funny?
« on: January 18, 2013, 09:14:16 PM »

Last Saturday I had the misfortune of being hit where it hurts guys the most whilst fielding. I was absolutely flattened, the end result is I've got a clot on my right one and am out this weekend. Whilst I was hunched over in pain throwing up & trying not to pass out all I could hear was my team mates & the opposition (70 metres away) having a laugh at my expense. Well it didn't stop there, 7 days on Ive now heard all the jokes. It got me thinking, why is it so damn funny? And, why is something so important so bloody tender & vulnerable???

The strange thing is, we all know how much it hurts don't we!

One of our players got hit square in the bags last season and collapsed like a sack of the proverbial. He wasn't wearing a box (silly boy has learnt his lesson the hard way) and lost consciousness.

He was the butt of our jokes for weeks - part of the payback for having to take him to hospital right after the game rather than allowing us to have a beer with the opposition.

God damn, a clot? That's brutal, my thoughts are with you...

Where were you fielding, in close? Should have been wearing a box... hindsight is amazing.

No, fielding at midon, just got a bad bounce with a new ball & someone who can drill it. always got the jewels protected when around the bat. I reckon I'll even bowl with one on for a while now.

I'd be walking around with a box on 24/7 from now on, that's brutal.

I was thinking the same thing.
Old boy, sounds like a terrible injury, possibly the worst cricket ball - family jewels story I've heard.
Makes my experience seem pleasant, if that is at all possible!

Ouch! Hope you feel better mate.

Luckily my defense has been good so far (translation- I have been lucky)-lol

Personally:

Someone gets hit "a little" = jumping up and down/cursing etc --->thats funny.

someone gets hit badly, collapsing etc ==> Not funny at all.

My first ever cricket match at about 13/14 for school. Didnt really think about it. Opened batting as shown potential in training/PE etc. Kid from other school played good level and was rapid for our age. He run in from boundary and got me sqaure in the nak-a-sak. Stupidly didnt go and get a box. Next ball bullseye again. What a first ever match! I found a box after the second ball!

In my first few games of 2008 and 2009 (2009 league cricket) I didn't wear a box. NOt out of bravardo or anything.. but because I didn't know I had too. I didn't own anything other than an old set of pads, old gloves, my dads 19 yr old GN bat and some cheap whites.. Never been hit once though, even now I wear one and play at a good level. 2012 I totally forgot to put one in in the last sunday league game against Warboys.. Only remembered about 2 overs from the end and just carried on. (having opened)

I've always worn a box, had a scare when I was 11 and we played against longridge. They had flintoff playing for them and at that age he was rapid, far quicker than anyone I'd ever faced. I went out to bat and my box slid down to my knees as I'd worn boxer shorts, didnt get hit but i never ever made that mistake again.

My dad used to play at a high level in lancs and played against some really top class pro's. Don't know if it was true but he used to tell a story about someone getting hit in the box by a quick. Apparently the box split open, things fell out of the split and then it closed again. Dunno if it was true or just winding up the juniors.

Old boy - sounds horrific mate, hope you recover soon.
