Sponsorships/part sponsorships!
« on: January 24, 2013, 06:09:01 PM »

I'd really love to know how the heck some people manage to get sponsored! I have seen and played against people who tbh I thought were dreadful but they have sponsors! One of them is sponsored by Woodstock and he plays village cricket surely that doesn't get a great lot of publicity?

Most of these "sponsorships" are 15-20% off which if you said you were going to buy bat pads gloves I think a few makers would give you a discount

No, it's because no one wants to give them free gear!

I doubt whether even 10% of county players are actually paid to use equipment. Most just get free gear but no monetary inducement.

Like Fat Bats says, there is 'sponsored' and there is 'getting a discount' We can all get a discount if we ask nicely and spend enough money!

They used to. And even then, these were just hefty discounts, working out to roughly equivalent to trade price.

They've stopped handing it out to any old chump now, current minor counties players or above are the only applications which will be accepted.

Very few county players are paid by a manufacturer, most are just on free gear + maybe a fee paid to attend promotional events.

Other 'sponsorships' also seem to include letting them buy their gear at reduced rates to which they sell on and keep the profit, pretty much like becoming an agent for them

I think this is quite a good one for brands IMHO. Yes if you give one guy really good rates if he promises to push your brand in his area you don't make any on his kit but if you sell him kit for others at a more 'normal' rate and just leave him a bit to make a quid or two you actually come out better off overall as the exposure is good.

Yeah everyone wants people on TV etc but there's nothing like having a player in most leagues helping you out. If people at normal clubs see their main run scorers getting runs and using (lets say Hammer for this discussion) Hammer bats the chances are more in that club and oppos will at least look it up and if your man can offer a 'deal' (say 5 or 10% off list price) they are likely to buy.. So yeah, sponsoring top top players sounds good but I think brands miss a big trick almost not going after the top batsmens from 'normal' clubs. Just my opinion.

To prove this I've managed to secure sales for a brand of 12 bats, 15 sets of pads, 11 pairs of gloves, 1 helmet, 3 pairs of spikes, 2 bags already.. That's purely because they know I score runs so believe what I tell them! And I'm not pro player!

Its probably quite a bit more than that, but the vast majority of the inducements are more or less beer money - I know one current Middlesex first XI player who gets £1'000 at the start of the season and the same again if he features in an overseas tour or T20 event...
