BUCS Cricket

Anyone else play University Cricket? What do you think of the decision to change all games from 50 over games to T20's below the top 3 divisions?

PS. It looks like 2 weeks after announcing this decision it will be changed as there is a vote tomorrow with every university having 1 vote.

Sounds like a stupid notion that isn't going to help with player development from the up and coming generation of the game.

What reasons did they give for wanting to implement the change to a shorter format?

I don't play but tbh that's complete crap. T20 cricket is practically pointless anyway. This wouldn't make me want to play the game tbh, in fact, I'd probably just not bothered playing cricket if it were like that. Very sad, this trend all the boards etc have with reducing games down to bare bones etc.

As for developing players, well I'd say we are just going to end up with more sloggers and batsmen that feel they have to smash everything.

I would of hated it if that was the case when I was at Uni.  No way would I want to trek the best part of 2 hours from Lancaster to Durham just for a T20.

We've voted to for 50 overs

I dont play at Uni, but I certianly wouldnt if it was t20, the travelling involved isnt worth it for a t20

50 overs in itself is a bit p**** for University games - they used to be 60 overs back in the day.  I have, erm, interesting memories of keeping wicket for 60 overs watching Liverpool Uni's two first class players mash our usually top quality attack (one played for Barbados, one played in the Varsity the year before, three were county twos players) for nearly 400 in baking heat...

Yep we have also voted for 50 over game. Although it would't affect us as we are in Southern Prem however the "no match may be rearranged in the case of weather rule" is absolutely ridiculous and applies to all leagues.

Here is a link to a petition against the changes:

Especially with the amount of rain there was last season, surely extra replay dates would have been a better idea!!  Hopefully it all gets sorted!!

Just what I was going to put, I went to York Uni and we travelled to Newcastle, Hull and others - no way that would have been worthwhile for a T20.

Quite - I can just imagine taking the three and a half hour bus journey to Durham or Newcastle for a game that might run an hour or so less....not!
