My new trigger movement
« on: February 01, 2013, 07:50:49 AM »

Whilst I was at nets yesterday, I finally bowed to the idea of having a trigger movement. I thought I'd try it out because my form was so bad, and boy did I feel good at the end of the net. Was a very simple one, but massively effective! I realised that I wasn't very confident at the crease and was missing a lot of balls, so I thought to myself 'screw it', I'm going to try a trigger and I'm fullly converted. Let me talk you through it......

1: Put my kit on, making sure left pad first, this would mean I could get in a ready position without feeling like I was going to get hurt. Helmet and thigh guard important also.

2: Walk down to the opposite end with a bit of a swagger, thinking to myself that I had remembered how to play cricket. This made sure that the bowlers knew I was ready, and meant business!

3: Look at the bowler in a side-on position.

4: Stand still, very very still.... more still than before even (fancy that) with head and eyes level.

5: See ball, hit ball!

All this helped me get into a still, ready, positive position when the first ball was bowled, and I had the best net ever last night.

I told you ;) a confident walk to the other end, as opposed to a shoulders slouched walk with no confidence lol. After all, a trigegr is only the way you get into the ready position.

Very much a case of each to their own, and there seems to be a clear pro/anti split on here. Definitely see the benefit of them when coached correctly, but very few people do it correctly, and cause far more problems than benefits if you ask me!

I packed in my trigger indoor this season and already seeing results in scores and shot success. Was too busy trying to trigger that I forgot about staying dead still, balanced and watching the ball.

I like the idea of staring down the bowler between deliveries at the other end of the strip tho ;)

I think that is they key justnotcricket  If you have not scored any runs for a a few years then why not change. You have have gone from trigger to no trigger and found the results to be benificial. That is great and you have been willing to change.

If you constantly don't score runs over a long period why would you not try something new. If you don't change I think the results will be exactly the same.

Trigger or no trigger its all about finding a way to score runs.

Totally agree - I went the other way, no trigger to trigger.  Wasn't scoring runs for several seasons and felt I was always late on the ball and not getting my feet moving.  Developed a trigger and I've had my best two seasons ever.  It's all about finding your own way and if you're lucky enough to have a good coach to assist then all the better.

The beauty of cricket - and any sport- is that there are different methods that achieve success.  If Michael Johnson's running coach had insisted that he run the othordox way, would he have achieved what he did?  Would Shiv Chanderpaul be successful?

I think this is the most important thing if you're determined to have a trigger. Either being coached it properly or having the time to work it out for yourself!

I must admit I've never had a trigger - I've got enough to concentrate on without trying to add another barnacle to the sleek racing hull that is my basic technique (cough, cough)  :o

But that's when you lick your balls and not hit your balls

My view on it is that if you have to think about your trigger movement then dont have one because whilst you are thinking about that you are not concentrating on what you should be, the ball. A trigger should just be natural to you to get you ready for the ball. I have never had one as it is not something I feel natural doing. When I have tried them its all I think about when the bowler is running in.. I find it easier to just stand still and let my feet move naturally as the ball is bowled.
