Learning to bowl spin
« on: February 03, 2013, 10:58:18 PM »

hello again everyone,

im looking for some tips, advise, guides etc on learning to bowl left arm spin, or to bowl left arm anything.

to fill everyone in the current extent of my bowling talent is slow, left arm 'spin' that doesn't really spin, i more loop it high, try to land it on the seems edge and move it that way, I hold it like a seemer would, but tend to angle the seem so its not between, but under one of my 2 fingers. few step run up around the wicket and sort of hope the high flight does the batsman. (developed this probably wrong technique as it was the only thing i could do with relative continuity for bowling in at training etc

im not saying i want to turn into a supremo bowler, just improve on what my ability allows so I can bowl to people in the nets at training and maybe a few overs in games if needed.

cheers folks

Unless its a terrible ball or pitch, a ball wont move off the seam at such a slow pace.

If you don't think you can achieve an easily repeatable spin action (i assume this is why you bowl 'lobs') then maybe tweaking up your current approach could help.

Bowl it seam up. No need to bowl express, as long as you aren't lobbing it up, any pace is fine. Putting it in the same area (probably length/just short of a length) consistently is key. From there simple things like varying your pace can be very effective.

This sort of very accurate slow-medium pace shouldn't take wickets, but it claims so many victims because its so difficult to score runs off. Batsmen can poke it around for easy singles, but you will claim no end of victims who get frustrated and go for the big heave over the ropes.

The easiest way to bowl spin is to bowl basically finger spin, this is basically using just your index finger to rip the ball as you release it. Holding the ball in your bowling hand put your index basically into a C shape over the seem and as you release rip the index finger down the side of the ball.

Very hard to type what I mean, but basically this is not going to get you the biggest turn but it does allow good control. I have been using this on and off for the last 2 seasons as my body is breaking down trying to bowl pace now.

The one other thing to remember is bowling anything well will take practise and lots of it. The 2 main spinners at my club, 1 offspin the other leg spin spend hours each week landing the ball in very small conned areas to firstly get the control needed to bowl good slow bowling. I imagine the wickets most if us play on will help you most weeks but to get that assistance you need to be able to land it in the right area. Dot worry if your not Turing it yet just focus on landing 90%+ in the right area then work on getting more turn/spin.

Hope it helps. Good luck

Are you looking to bowl leg spin or off spin as I find wrist spinners turn the ball a lot more as I'm a right arm off spinner myself if you're looking to bowl off then pm me and we can have a chat :)

You should make up your mind as to what you want to bowl, left arm spin or medium pace .
If its spin I would suggest using fingers rather than wrists, as its a lot easier to control. If you just lob/loop the ball it wont do anything unless the pitch is giving you assistance. Hold the ball as SoulMan described and give it a rip or impart some rotation on the ball (as you would squeeze a lemon with thumb, first finger and middle finger) . If you give it a rip the ball will have drift as well as dip.
I would also suggest bowling left arm diagonally around the wicket as I bowl the same and it helps me get my back foot (left one) nicely parallel to the crease. Land on the toe of my right foot and rotate on it (on a loose dusty rack you will find a perfect circle mark where you swivel ). The rotation would come automatically if you have a full follow through of both arms. So its important to have a good follow through as well.
Hope that helps

hello again folks,

apologies for my silence but felt I should get a decent for bowling sessions in to update folk. I spent a good while looking into video tutorials on youtube etc and have now settled on left arm leg spin, holding it split fingered with a cocked wrist, few steps run up to the crease. had 2 net sessions and have settled into it nicely! have nets again on saturday so will try and get a video for everyone. thank you all for your advise!
