Kit bags
« on: February 14, 2013, 02:21:09 PM »

Just bit of a research really. Why do people use soft bags more now as opposed to coffins. The coffins protect your kit perfectly and actually take up less floor space in a changing room as they don't spread out. They last a lifetime really too I have still got touring coffins 15 yrs old and are still in good condition. Any thoughts guys

I think if someone was to come up with a compact moulded plastic coffin with wheels etc which would be much lighter then i would interested.

Possibly down to trends - coffins reflected the old-style traditional suitcase and were developed in that era.  I think that the soft bags are reflective of the existing trend for sports holdalls, as well as the variety of colours and shapes that sports holdall materials can bring to bags.

Do you not find that kit bags get trampled on in a changing room which annoyed the hell out of me even when it was someone else's kit.

Weight and difficult to fit in cars.

I think it is down to trends.

I'd go for a harder shell solution. I will also stack neatly in a car and protect the bat more.

Make sure you include a chilled section for a few beers!

Weight and difficult to fit in cars.

Golfists have car boots designed for their needs! (jaguar are one firm who do that) and they use a rigid case for their paddles.

If it where wide enough to fit into a boot width ways then why not.

The drawback with coffins is weight more than anything. Yes, they do protect your kit but they should do as they weigh a ton! They're basically flightcases for cricket gear and it seems like overkill to me. Imagine taking one of them on a bus or greeting your teammate who has just swung around to pick you up with a 3 ton behemoth....you would not be popular.

I use a duffle for netting with and I am looking at a slightly larger duffle to use for match days. I'm not even that keen on using a wheelie bag anymore but that's just down to size.

What I would love to see is a slightly more rigid duffle that retains it's shape so it will stand up a bit better with a separate pocket for boots, 1 for clothes plus another couple for bits and bobs, room inside for pads, gloves, box, thigh guards etc 2 bat pockets on the outside plus a clip to attach your lid to the outside (My BAS duffle has this and it's really useful)

Coffins are great but for the majority really impractical.

My thoughts exactly when I was travelling about playing you could fit two coffins in the boot of a normal car and stack other kit on top where the soft bags end up bulging out everywhere and you end up having to cram them in a car boot. No heavier than a soft bag is and if its got wheels its not a problem. Expense I could understand

I agree - I can't see why it hasn't been done already. They would be lighter than old style coffins too.

We used to use this type of box in the Army.

Cheap, easy to stack, brand, and can be made from recycled materials.

Imagine something similar made for cricket.....

Coffins are so impractical it's silly, some of the changing rooms in my league can barely fit a duffle so to have somebody with a coffin would be a nightmare. Agree that a sturdier duffle with golf bag style support straps would be brilliant. Most Duffles have uncomfortable straps which is very frustrating.

I agree entirely re; duffle bags.  I'm going to look at one for nets and most likely match days - leave the big bag at home and select what you need for the day.

I do agree they need to be sturdier and have more compartments.  A hybrid of some of the upright bags and a duffle would be perfect.  The tennis bags are a good thought...

And please, not in red and black!  A lot of bags are in these colours and I really dislike them together!
