Just out of interest what tools are you using to shape with? Also, what are you using for sanding/ buffing? It might be worth posting some pictures of your setup...I'm sure the forum members would be very interested to see.

As I was asked by ryan in another thread, I finally got round to taking a few pictures onec I'd had a bit of a cleanup.  Probably be taking some more at the weekend

Currently have a real problem with the work bench moving, so likely to be making some modifications  to it before I do much more in there.

Cracking set up! You might want to add a 'donkey' to help spread the force you put into the shaping - might solve the problem of the bench moving?
Also, not sure if you you are happy sharpening the drawknife all the time, if you invest in one just to work with the cane, which tends to blunt the blades for fun and have another one just for willow then it saves a lot of time sharpening....well it's saved me a lot of time anyway.

It's a swivel vice from machine mart. Cost about £70. I have another drawknife but it's rubbish, so am looking at getting a smaller one. What do you mean by "donkey"?
The next addition I'm planning is a heater as it gets pretty nippy in there! Although I find once I get moving and working, it's not so bad.

Just a quick question that some others may be able to answer.
Do you need to have a press to press the willow? Is there any MacGyver ways to do it?

Cheers

Having git majorly fed up with the slow speed at which I was binding a handle, I built this today. Not perfect but it turns a 30 min job into 5

Rather than start a new thread, here's the latest bat to come from the bat cave. 2lb 8oz, 20mm edges. Picks up really nicely. Will get some better pics up once my camera batteries are charged.

Does it power the lathe then?

I use the dogs for that. Tail wagging generates a lot of power!

I think what he means is a padded section which comes out from the bench. Enables u to rest the toe end on that whilst the handle is clamped in the vice. Helps spread the force and pressure when shaping. Also gives a steady base to work from

That is a massive improvements on previous efforts mate, well done. Also don't mean to sound like previous one's were bad but a good step forward here.

Thanks guys. It has got a lovely pickup in it's current state.  Weight is about 2lb 8oz, so will likely be about 2lb 9oz when stickered and gripped.  A mate wanted a copy of the salix pod, so I'm quite happy with how this came out.  Having a decent drawknife and sharpening stone helps, but I've just got a pattern maker's plane which has got about half a dozen different radiused soles, which is a lot more useful for concaving than the single round bottom plane I had before
