My Supreme (Vintage Profile)
« on: February 22, 2013, 01:36:13 AM »

Hey guys, yet another bat I have purchased! I will be short and sweet about this review, as it is getting late! (Will update a more detailed one at a later date, maybe even with a rebound test video!) Here are some pictures:

Specs:
Weight - 2lb 11.24oz with scuff sheet and hybrid grip
Handle - Nice oval
Middle position - mid-low (Around 6.5-7 inches off the toe, that is around 16-18cm)
Pick up - Picks up around 2.10, so well balanced.
Concaving - Very moderate
Edge size - Strange one here, one edge is offset, and 35mm, while the other one at the same point is 32mm. The peak of the other edge is 34mm, but isn't as offset as the other! (Pictures 3 and 4)
Ping/resonance/response (Whatever you want to call it!) - Taps up really nicely, so I have to give it a 9.5 in terms of that, and the sound off the mallet is lovely, a 9.5 for that too!
Finishing - I can see the circular sanding marks from the orbital sanding, and also some sort of cracks, maybe pressing ones on the inside shoulder area, as shown in the last 2 pictures. Also, a few splinters on the outside edge, not that these things affect performance or anything, but after buying a Salix, Laver and Newbery, I can definitely say that a top quality finish does give the buyer more satisfaction! EDIT: Finishing is exquisite. 8) Extremely pleased with Paul's new finishing process, not sure what he does, but that gleam is very desirable indeed!

All in all, pretty happy with the purchase! Of course, the finishing could definitely be better, but I am impressed with the response and feel of the bat, it should be an absolute rocket when it is played in! Also, love the simple look of the stickers, although feel they could be applied further up the splice! The profile, well, the pictures kind of tell you, but it is an absolute stormer of a profile! The shoulders are pretty thick too at 16mm, which I'm guessing helps with the balance and also a decent sized toe (over 25mm) to help prevent that yorker damage!

Thanks again to Paul, I wouldn't hesitate to do business with him again, as he kept me in the loop all the time and was quick to answer questions! 8)

Well chad thanks for the review am sorry if you aren't completely satisfied with the finish first time someone has said those points will take it on board. If there are that many discrepancies it should never have left the workshop so please send it back and we will sort it out or remake it as we only want satisfied customers here at Aldred bats.

I've had a couple of bats off Paul and both have been exceptional quality in all aspects of the bat. With each bat being hand made it isn't going to be an exact science chad. If you want a bat with exactly the same dimensions I'd go an get a Cnc made bat but then there's no personal touch put into the blade. The main part of a bat for me is how well it performs and all my Aldreds are absolute guns! Now in a dilemma of which one to use come game day. Wouldn't go anywhere else for a bat service is top notch aswell, made to feel like a pro! Cheers paul

It's not that it's a great offer its what in my view everyone should do. I have and am building my reputation through quality and service. If its not right I take it personally and it hurts just as it did when I was playing as a career, so I intend to treat people the way I would want to be treated myself and we have many people visiting now from every standard of cricket including professionals and intend to keep the ethos that everyone can get what the professionals are having. In fact most pros don't get the option of having their bats made its only a certain few.
If something is wrong I want to know what I have done and why I have missed it so it never happens again so hence this is what I say to everyone who buys from me. It's called personal service. I can't in my view offer any more than that

Other's don't do it Paul. That's why some of us don't like the large companies who source 75 per cent of the bat from abroad and charge us UK prices, sticker up grade 2's as grade 1's and think we don't know the difference.
A high class batmaker in this Country told me the lower grade bats go out to the shops, and if I wanted another bat go and see him personally from source to choose.

Keep it up mate you are increasing your reputation not only on here, good personal service is not old fashioned.
There's a whole world of club cricketers out there who want exactly what you are providing.

Thanks ppccopener  mate I have cleaned bats up for shops that have bought old stock out from places closing down, price tags still on and I have cleaned stickers off bats for them to re label and £300 bats had huge knots hidden behind the rather large labels. Astonishing. I see people all the time selling what they say as grade1 for £80 which shows that they aren't grade 1 as the unit price for a grade 1 cleft and a top quality handle wouldn't be far off that before any work is done.
It's about honesty everyone will make a mistake at some point and if you have you have to just put your hand up and sort it out that has been my policy from the day I started and will continue to be. I aim to be the best not only in the performance and quality but the service provided. Keep it in Britain.

Missed out this comment earlier! I have just started a thing where I measure the size of both edges (thanks to a very strange GN e41 500 Paul at IJC talked about and how the edges were pretty different!) and does nothing to the performance of the bat. I know handmade bats aren't an exact science, and these edge things don't have to be even to 100%, as I know that even CNC machines can get it wrong if they aren't calibrated properly! This wasn't really something which was of concern.

The most important things to me in batmaking are the pressing, handle fitting and shaping, and the weight distribution. Paul has done really well in all these areas, and these are the things which are really needed to make a bat perform. By giving feedback on things such as finishing, the stickers, it really has no effect of the performance of the bat at all. However, if you look at the bats from Salix and Laver, both brands which I rate very highly, their finishing is exceptional. This is why I mentioned the finishing, as I put Aldred in the same category as these two, (very classy and high quality, just a bit smaller) so will always inspect extra carefully when looking at this area. A lot of people buy bats because of the looks of the bat, and if a bat has a pearly gleam to it because of the finish, and is coupled with a classic looking branding, it will certainly attract a lot of people! Like I mentioned in the review, Paul was excellent with communication and I wouldn't hesitate to deal with him again, and his quick response to fix it proves that I am right to hold him and his brand in this esteem! :)

I got my Aldred back from Paul today. He gave it a run through his new finishing set up, and also made the oval in the handle more exaggerated. I have to say, it looks and feels absolutely stunning! The handle feels so much more comfortable, just perfect! These photos don't quite do it justice, but I hope they will suffice!

Extremely happy with what Paul has done, and his love for making cricket bats is clearly shown by the volume of satisfied customers he has had over the recent months! 8)

Chad, I am beginning to worry that you may be turning into the HOSK!! Not that it's a bad thing.  How many top grade bats do you have now?

Good question... :-[ Well, technically speaking, this isn't a top of the line bat. :D I shall count my top of the line bats and get back to you on that! Off the top of my head, only about 4 haha!  8)
