H4L Hattori Devil Review
« on: February 22, 2013, 02:00:54 AM »

Hey guys, yet another purchase and review... (Sorry if I bore you with my reviews, but feel it is only polite to do so when I have purchased a bat! :-[) So, after being told (bullied) by Wilkie to get a H4L, and forum members telling me that I was missing out by having not used a H4L before, I decided to take the punt on a Devil Grade Hattori Matt had for sale! Here are the pics:

Specs:
Weight - 2lb 11.69oz with scuff sheet and Shock Absorba grip
Handle - Oval/round - One of the negative points, as the handle isn't very oval at all!
Middle position - mid-low, round 6-7 inches off the toe, that is around 15-18cm. (Actually quite hard to tell, as the middle is long!)
Pick up - Picks up nicely, less than 2.11, so well balanced.
Concaving - Very (VERY) minimal
Edge size - 29mm each
Ping/resonance/response (Whatever you want to call it!) - Taps up nicely, so a 9-9.5 in terms of that, and makes a beautiful sound off the mallet, 9.5 for that!
Finishing - A good finish, not the best, but definitely a good one!

At a price point of £125, I really cannot complain much about this bat at all. Yes, the handle isn't quite what I like, but I'll live with that. The reason I got this bat (besides the peer pressure!) was because I felt I was lacking a bat for wet weather. I needed a bat which was less than £150 with a low middle, and felt that since Matt had this up for sale, I may as well take the plunge! It is a very blemishy/knotty bat, but I could care less as it doesn't seem to affect the performance! (At least off the mallet and ball!) The middle on this bat is long, but also wide because of the VERY minimal concaving, and picks up really well despite the middle position. I love the look of the stickers too, and also the branding on the edge! If my memory serves me correctly, this is the very first bat I have ever had which has been branded with a branding iron!

All in all, very happy with my purchase, and Matt was very quick at sending out the bat. I am a little annoyed that this bat does feel so nice though, as I am looking to buy less, and hoped that this would be the very last bat I buy for a LONG time, but I am a little tempted with the idea of Devil graded Tempos! :-[

Question here from the uninitiated newbie, but what is 'Devil grade'? I have a H4L Hattori myself which is a G2 and goes like a dream, but am intrigued by this Devil grade tag

they are bats downgraded because of faults or imperfections

most of the batmakers have them just called them by different names

with bats plus £200.00 they are a good way to get a grade 1 providing there is no major fault with the bat

salix call them Rogues

Thanks for clearing that up ppc. I may have to keep my eyes open for the next round of Devil grades which come up for sale then. Would love a Tempo in the devil grade!

So what's the collection upto now Chad? Any chance of a couple of updates to the your kit 2013 thread?! What are you selecting for your match bat? Personally love your Helios - so much so I dropped the fella a line to see what he had about but unfortunately  :(

Will do an update soon! I think I have one more bat on the way, but I might do a little video with them all in it tonight! I have sooo many bats right now. :( Ah right, you contacted James @ Helios? If I decide to get rid of it, I'll let you know, but chances of that are slim, as it is the best performing bat I have! Pick up feels a little off right now though, so may experiment a little with grips!
