Opinion on new bat.
« on: February 28, 2013, 04:00:53 AM »

First post on here from the land down under.
Season just finished here and looking at a new bat.
Currently have a custom made Fisher which has served me well but I was looking on the net and I saw Salix pod players bat and the prices over in the UK are a lot cheaper than Aus.
I liked the look of the Salix and i noticed a lot of people talking about the H4L bats.
Looking for something around 2 pound 8 1/2 or 2 pound 9 with a mid to low centre.
Are these brands of bats any good?

Welcome to the forum mate. As a fellow Aussie mate goodluck on here not parting with your cash, it's hard with the prices you can pick up bats. You can't go wrong with any of the forum sponsors, they will happily custom make you a bat for a lot cheaper than Aussie prices. H4L has a great rep, my advice would be to PM some of the sponsors on here and they will help sort you out. If your set on a Salix, one of the retailers on here would also be able to help you out and possibly even get you one custom made or at least hand selected at a decent price.

Welcome again :) where in OZ are you?

The pom we have at our club keeps telling me how expensive bats are in oz so i looked and I can see what he means.

Good luck not spending your money, mate. I started going on this forum when I owned just one bat. I now have five. I'm not even very good (the bats are though).

Hey, welcome to the forum! Both of the brands you mention are very good, I have a H4L Hattori which responds really nicely, and my brother uses a Salix Pod Players, which he absolutely loves. What kind of a budget are you on? If you are looking for a mid-low middle, then I would suggest the Vintage shape from Aldred, I have one made up from a Supreme cleft and it really is exceptional!

All does depend on your budget though, as shipping to Australia is quite expensive, and you also have to factor in customs fees...

Custom fees don't apply...well I've gotten at least 6 sent from the uk and never paid fees. It only applies if the value of the goods is $1000 aud. Can get postage for 30-40 pound....and for the prices you can get a bat made for plus postage still saving hundreds on top grade big named bats in oz.

I bought a few bats from Andy and James from Laver and Wood. I sent him a picture of the profile I wanted B52 bomber profile and I wanted to make sure that the sweet spot was lower. He did a fantastic job on the bat and I have scored plenty of runs with it. The problem is the balls we use in our league here in the U.S are terrible so I should never be using that nice bat. I have broken pletny of bats on crapy cricket balls.

I emailed Salix and they said 30 pounds postage and 315 pounds to get a pod players  which is without the vat tax.
Seems a very good price.

Go for it, I have only heard great things about Salix. The Pod Players my brother uses is really top quality, and for a top of the range bat made by one of the best in the world at £345 posted, it is much better priced than a top of the range bat from Aus, and it is basically the same as what we pay here!

Welcome Dave - Salix Pod Players are superb bats! Quality and finish are excellent and the performance is sublime!
But H4L and many other custom batmakers on here can offer you some amazing bats - I know as I have used a number!
Good luck in deciding and hope it works well for you!  8)

During a match one of my club friends played a cut shot with his Salix bat.

Initially the runner at the other end ran a slow single but eventually ended with two. He was surprised

how far the ball went.

What is the difference between the Pod, Torque and the Wasp?
Is it just the different height of the sweet spot?
