Making my first bat
« on: March 07, 2013, 06:46:24 AM »

Hi guys New to the forums but have been reading as much as i can on here to learn. Currently going to start to try make some Cricket bats when i finish work just for a hobby. The thing is Im going to be making bats with all types of different woods. I Play alot more Indoor cricket then out door so the bats don't need to be as strong as a english willow bat. i just want to learn the craft first then eventually make myself a ew bat.

So my question to everyone on this forum is do you have any tree types you think could possibly make a good cricket bat for say just muck around. I am from Australia as well. I was watching a review on Cricketstoreonline and he does one on a eucalyptus willow bat, and it seems to ping well and hold up. So this weekend i am off to The dump to hopefully find some old cricket bats to rip the handles off so i can use them. Will keep you guys posted with pictures aswell.

Top thread. Good luck with this one, fella. I think that the hardest thing will be finding timber that is as easy to work as willow once seasoned. Proabably using green timber might get round this issue. Eucalyptus is used for turning quite often so you might be onto something there.

I really want to make a bat out of an NZ timber called Kauri which used to be used to make masts and spars for ships. Anyone know if Laver have tried that?

My mate is an ex-pat living in Brazil. He's turning out for Brasilia and Brazil as a keeper/batsman! I'll try and get hold of him and ask what they use as he's told me that they use a local tree due to the lack of willow.

Thanks for the warm welcome. As you said it's going to be hard to find timber that will be easy to work with but i think it will be a fun thing trying to test different timbers. With eucalyptus willow Im guessing it comes from eucalyptus trees or gum trees well im hoping it is. Have the perfect tree to start with.
