How does 'Ping' affect a bat's performance?
« on: March 13, 2013, 11:49:19 AM »

I have a few bats, in particular an adidas pellara which is my netting bat and a kookaburra rogue which is my match bat. The pellara pings alot better off a mallet than the rogue but does that mean it's a better bat? Or does the rogue need a bit more work with the mallet? Neither have been used that much so I don't see that they could have lost their quality.

every cleft is different. depending on the pressing you could get different results on response. for instance - 2 identical clefts in everyway( not possible but you get the idea). if you gave 1 cleft to a bat maker who presses all clefts individually ( so takes into consideration the structure etc) and 1 to a bat maker who mass produces bats and presses all the same to save time, you would have two very different responses. bat makers press in different ways and also balance and shape bats in different ways. this all adds up to if a bat performs or not.

some bats like lavers also tend to 'open up' after knocking in/being used and become better over time. the rogue could get better or it could be a case that the pellaras package is better suited to your game and therefore the response feels better.

The only way to know which is the better bat for you (which is an individual thing) is to actually use them in a game or outside net.

Some bats can feel terrible with the mallet, but nice when you bounce a ball on.
Other bats can be like cannons with the mallet, the ball, but you aren't able to middle one in a game...

Yeah to be honest the Kook does feel pretty nasty on the mallet, there isn't much of a springy response to it and it sounds different too. I wonder whether it was just not as good a quality of wood as the Adidas. First game is April 14th so I guess that's when I will find out how good the Kook really is, just hoping it wasn't a waste of money!

In my experience knocking in bats over the years I would not go of how they respond with a mallet or even bola balls for that matter. The kookaburra is possibly just pressed a bit harder and is why it sounds different of the mallet. I have had a few kookaburras over the years and they get better over time, mine have anyway. If it were me I would forget netting with the adidas for now and get using the kookaburra in the nets if thats going to be your match bat then it should be ready to go come the season.

I had a bat a years or two ago that absolutely flew off the bowling machine, but was dead with a real ball, pretty much used used it for training on the machine until I sold it!

Strange thing is the Kook actually sounds softer than the Adidas, but no matter how hard I hit it with the mallet it doesn't cause any more dents so it's obviously knocked in correctly. I will take it to the next nets session this week and see how it gets on with an indoor bola aswell as real bowlers. Hoping it will still go nicely otherwise it looks like I will be using a new match bat from now on!
