Lara vs Tendulkar
« on: March 20, 2013, 07:04:37 AM »

This article should spark some debate...

http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/mar/19/the-spin-brian-lara-sachin-tendulkar

Thoughts?  Although I don't necessarily agree, I particularly like the comment; "Sachin starts to look like Kallis without the wickets" - one word; brave!

Kallis IS much better than Tendulkar so I can't see a problem. Tendulkar has been over-rated for years

Bit of a tough call saying someone with 100 centuries and 163 fifties is overrated. Still averaging 54 after 197 tests. I'd like to be that overrated

Good article that. Got to agree though Kallis is the best cricketer all round that I have ever seen. Would sooner watch Lara though at his peak above Kallis or Tendulkar. When he was in full flow he was just awesome to watch. I used to love watching him play spin and toy with the bowlers. I think it says it all how when you read the autobiographies of all the past Aussies from that era like Mcgrath, Warne, Langer, Hayden, Gilchrist, Waugh etc you get the impression they respected and feared Lara more than any other player.

I much preferred to watch Lara bat. The guy was awesome!

To call someone who has scored 100 centuries, played at the highest level for more than 2 decades "over rated" is ignorance. Kallis is a better all rounder but Sachin is a better batsman . But would rather watch Lara in full flow ...he was a treat ...

on cricinfo Mark Nicholas had to do an article on the best after Bradman and went for Sobers.

Personally I would say that for pure exileration, nothing beats Lara (well maybe Viv, actually - this is nuts...), I remember being glued to the TV during his 153 against the Austrailians.

I would loved to have seen Barry Richards bat though...

Its difficult to say who is the best - Viv Richards will always be my favourite, followed by Tendulkar then Lara with the "fat blocker with an eye on his average" a distant fourth, but there is in truth very little to call between them.

All in their prime were fairly equal with each bringing a different aspect/attribute to the game. I wish I had a time machine so we get them all together against some of the best bowlers ever and that would a match to watch for ages.

It's a mute argument as you can't really compare as for me best batsmen I've seen was Viv but you have to look at stats to an extent but thinking that no matter what anyone tells me sobers has to be best all round cricketer of all time

He did but he automatically ruled-out anyone that had the luxury of wearing a helmet during their international career

Tendulkar for me in this debate
