For me, Tendulkar is more of an efficient run-getter, while Lara was less consistent, but more touched by genius. No contest as to who I'd pay my money to watch, Brian Charles all the way...

this was a debate on sky sports ive coverage during the second test, it was decided ont here that lara was the man to watch but tendulka would be the guy to put your life on, however kallis has been the best all round player ever

this is the typical pub debate and no right answer all 3 have epic stats but id say kallis with the wickets and catches just edges it

You need to pick one of them to feature in your third XI and you are trying to beat a Premier League team in a cup match...

Who do you pick? Always Kallis in my book.

That almost goes without saying, but that takes into account their all-round ability, which of course puts Kallis miles ahead. In terms of batting as a single entity, Lara is class, he just makes it look fun, when he plays you can see the passion in the strokes, it's not always efficiency or "textbook" per se, but it's just bloomin' glorious. There is that touch of genius in his batting, the same genius that KP/de Villiers/Sehwag have, that ability to almost do what they want.

Actually, I'd be inclined to take Richards - his swagger would intimidate the opposition, and he'd be a galvanising force on teh team (plus his offies would block up an end nicely).  Oh, and I'd be sure that he wouldn't do what Jacques would and bat slowly for himself...

Well I was just answering the title question, so neeeeurgh ;) to be honest I think most of us would take Richards, be it Viv or Barry (or both!). But Viv... Yeah, I wouldn't wanna get on his bad side. What a player!

I would go with Tendulkar over Lara, but as several others have said IVA Richards over them both. I was never a massive fan of Lara's batting style, always frustrated me that most of his runs came square of the wicket. There is nothing better that a straight drive back past the bowler in my opinion and he rarely hit straight drives.

I guess I was spoilt being brought up watching Richards and Botham at the County Ground in Somerset.

Has to be tendulkar as he looked so confident at the crease.

Barry Richards is a good shout from the previous generation

Most South Africans would tell you that Barry Richards wasn't even the best player in their team

I have to go with Lara. big big fan...

some of his shots would just amaze me.

tendulkar has calmed down his aggression but not with lara he

was consistently a positive player. there are numerous examples

he would dispatch bowlers for 15 to 20 runs an over in a test match.

I would rather watch Lara, but I would prefer Tendulkar in my team
