That bat is stunning.

I have a sneaking suspicion when Mark rocks up at nets tonight with his new Supreme there may be a few more orders winging their way 'Up North'.

I'd have one but my wife has a very beady eye!

The scale things a tough one isn't it. My mate where I grabbed the old weights from had to change his first set of new electronic scales for the shop when he had to change from the old balance scales as they weren't correct and got tested. He didn't know they were and he had paid  over £500 for them it turns out they just had a fault so luckily didnt cost him anything extra. But he swore by his old balance scales so to me where do you go. I have put tried and tested weights on my scales to test them and they are right by those so what should I do. It's like shoe sizing I know I am a size 9 in bowling boots but when I used to have Adidas or still buy Adidas I have to buy a 10 so who's right. I don't know the answer as I could buy state of the art scales and they could still weigh different to what the customers reading is.
Hit asda and pick up a set of digital scales. Put your test weights on these as this will be more accurate. Old weights will of had wear. A laver of mine came in 3oz heavier than requested. My cheap digital scales were within 1gram against 3 sets of calibrated digital scales that we use in work.

So here's the interesting anomaly...

Neither aldred bat that shipped overseas nor a number of Lavers have arrived weighing what the batmaker has weighed the bats at. My hypothesis is that somewhere in the airfreifht shipping cycle, something is affecting weight and while i have a theory, I'm not sure it is accurate and it needs some research.

i weighed my iphone 4 and it weighs only 2 grams more than recommended weight
weighed myself on a proper scale with and without the bat and difference is 2.75 oz which is 2lb 12oz
so hopefully the scale i am using is correct
its a USPS postal service recommended scale
i am planning to order  calibration weights to measure

Anyways what matters is the bat

Well I am a man of very mixed emotions this morning like i12 lost sleep over the bat weight so have been out and spent nearly £50 on a pair of electronic scales. Have come back home grabbed a cleft to test the weight issues only to find the electronic ones giving the same reading as my old style ones. Just blown money on something I trusted was right. I am now not even going to worry about it now and accept I cannot do anymore than I already do and just keep trusting my instinct and not over worry. I think 99% of my customers seem happy so I will be satisfied with that.

i had very similar scales to Paul up until a month of so ago. whilst i trusted them to be accurate i was always worried how the load of the bat was spread out and if the scales were accurate because of that. i bought a cheap digital set and did a test with those, the traditonal scales and another digital set which were a fair price.they were all within half an oz of each other so couldnt complain. stick with what you know Paul. if it was constant comments about weight then maybe you would need to look at it but a one off must have something else to do with the increase.

Sorry tim2000s I was not able to insert your quote the normal way "So here's the interesting anomaly...

It's an interesting point Tim about shipping bats and the weight differences (could be to do with temperature, moisture or pressure if air freighted). Testing this would take some effort with lots of variables, time and most of all money. I would think that they are gaining moisture somewhere in the shipping process as Paul's scales look to be accurate. Perhaps packing with silica gel in with bat to absorb some excess moisture could reduce this effect? I don’t suppose that the bats were oiled before it was weighed by the new owners?

Paul I think you have done all you can and glad to see you have check weights for your scales, shame it cost you so much for the new scales to find out that your other ones are accurate.

The easy way would be to use some angler's digital scales and weigh the bat in a plastic bag hung off the hook - after zeroing them for the weight of the bag.

that was an option but thought the digital scales would be better

I have decided that I don't think it matters what you do you just have to trust what you do. If your honest you can't do any more. My whole ethos from the start of making bats was to provide a service that not many professionals get that is to have bats made to order most staff players just get pre made bats sent out. They are the best ones granted but they are pre made.  But my thing was to be honest and give as much customer service as possible but unfortunately business wise there is a limit to what you can do. I will keep doing what I am doing.  It relates to something that was said to me years ago. I was struggling with my game and confidence as a young cricketer and an old England team mate sat in the changing rooms with me and said" how did you get yourself into this position in cricket where you have gained a contract year after year" my reply was " we'll because I could run in and bowl half decent away swing and have a big contribution in the field" his reply was " well there you have the answer don't change what you naturally do just learn and move forward, back yourself"
It is relative with whatever you do I think and sometimes just need reminding of it

Back yourself Paul.
There are a growing band of very happy customers who back your judgement and honesty.
