My GM epic is not what i thought it would be!
« on: March 26, 2013, 07:52:11 AM »

Hello People,

This is Wrahil from Pakistan.

I bought a gm epic 808 a few days ago and knocked it for atleast 6 hours with a mallet before using it in a match. However, it is not what I thought it would be. It does not perform as good as my other bat (MIDS ZH power) and my friend's CA 15000.

So my question is, will it get better by the time as I only have played 2 matches with it so far.

Secondly, do I need to oil it as I didn't do at the time of knocking.

Your help shall be highly appreciated.

Regards.

Every bat you get will perform differently to start with. I believe GM bats take a bit longer to open up so if I was you I'd keep going with it

Thanks for your reply Roco which is well noted. But why does it gives a high pitched sound as compared to other bats every time a ball or a mallet hits it?

Hi Wrahil, do you have any pictures of your Epic 808?

The high pitched sound could be the willow itself. Pakistan made bats are often a drier wood. So that could be a part of it. I would say persevere with the bat and give it a good run in some nets.

Should an 808 be expected to perform as well as a top bat from an Asian brand?

I'll bet my house it lasts a lot longer.

Welcome to the forum by the way mate. You don't really need to oil or knock in a GM, as this is done in the factory. Unless you bought one of the ones made in India under license. If there is no sticker on the front saying 'ready to play now' then yes you should oil it and knock it in.

Cool, it would help us clarify if its UK made or Asian made, or even fake rubbish as there is a lot of fake GM's.

For me, I've had 3 GM's over the years and they've all been harder than other bats off the mallet, they do last a long time and open up nicely though.

I guess seeing all of these barely pressed, soft pieces of timber from other brands makes it seem harder than it really is?

Thanks for the info and welcome Sir.

I bought it from VKS London so I am sure its made in UK and yes it has sticker saying 'ready to play now'. How long does it usually takes for a GM to open up? Any ideas?

Will do it soon enough. As I mentioned, I bought it from a reliable supplier in UK so I'm sure its not fake or made in India.

Really does vary. It could be a few hours of good use or it could be a bit longer. I would use it in nets whenever you can and get it going.
