Unusual Sounding Middle
« on: April 01, 2013, 12:51:45 PM »

Okay this is a slightly strange one but I have a brand new BAS (sourced from Asad) which to my ears has just the strangest sounding middle. Its a very deep resonance, almost like a kind of slapping sound. The only time I have heard another bat sound like this is when my Redback was getting towards the end of its life span and was delaminating. But this bat is only at the beginning of its life, everywhere else on the bat sounds normal. As far as I can tell the bat is sound in every respect, the face doesn't appear to be coming away, handle/splice is fine, there's no cracks (unless they are inside where I can't see them) and it doesn't appear to be affecting performance in any way yet. But its such a strange sound its making me wonder whats going on here.

Anyone have any previous experiences like this?

I would suggest that it has delaminated.

Just the sound you are looking for. Sounds like you you have a belter.

is that something that can happen so early in a bats life?? Two contrasting view so far, I'm not sure whether to be happy or concerned!! Any other comments would be appreciated!

without hearing the bat, it is difficult to say, cause there are a few possibilities...

Yes unfortunately, I would suggest that the moisture content is very low. There are many reasons, but you can never know why a bat delaminates. It won't effect the performance at all, just the sound - this normally suggests that the bat will not last too long to be honest, but it's probably a real performer currently.

Interesting thanks, you've pretty much confirmed what I thought in the first place. I think as long as it performs well I won't be too bothered but I'll have to keep an eye on it. If I have time today I'll put up a video of me bouncing a ball on it so people can hear for themselves.

Think the main question is does it perform?  If the answer is yes then who cares what sound it makes?

absolutely, it can moo every time I hit it for all I care, but I am concerned that it won't last me very long or that the performance is already on an inevitable down-slide after one net!
