Guess what I'm making...
« on: April 10, 2013, 08:34:03 AM »

Pretty obvious from the picture!

I'll keep this thread updated but I'm hoping to complete my own press for less than £300 within a couple of months.

Progress will be updated as I go along but I don't have too much time to devote at the minute so it will be slow and steady.

No... But now you mention it!

Ha, never realised, I've called them Defier, I've also Challenger and Contender, but I'm just playing at the minute.

Well, I always see people buying pre-pressed clefts and as an engineer I thought, why can't I make a press? It's just a roller with pressure applied. The only reason they cost so much is they are so niche, so pretty much everyone is a one-off.

When I've finished I don't mind people copying the idea.

How many hours in work time are you actually expecting it to take? Also , being someone who doesn't have much of a clue about this , how do you make sure the right amount of pressure is being put on the cleft (probably a really simple answer that I don't get  :().

I'd imagine it's a lot of trial and error - a lot of cheap willow will get wasted during the process of getting the pressing right, but thats half the fun!
I say good luck to you master banksy, if i had the time I would be doing exactly what you are attempting to do - no point spending £1000+ on a machine that some one is getting rid of when you can make your own and truly understand it's design and function.
Im presuming from the 'chicken soup can' it's going to be a relatively flat faced press, or are you hoping to shape that into a slight camber?
Also, nice looking stone work bench!

If I had all the tools and materials infront of me I reckon it would probably take me 3 days, so 30 hours ish.

I'll be using a floorstanding hydraulic workshop press to apply the pressure so it's just by eye, or I could fit a pressure guage.

We'll see how things go in coming weeks anyway.

That one that beachcricket had for sale was very basic and I imagine it would take less than a day to make if you were handy with a welding kit.

Looking forward to this thread and wish you well.

Be interesting to see how it goes, as I've got a friend who's doing his masters in engineering that is going to help me build one at some point in the future.

Can't beat good ol' Yorkshire Stone ;) Although I think I'm getting kicked out of the cellar soon and moving up into the garage.
There will be alot of trail and error... but at least you can keep applying a bit more, have a tap, apply a bit more... etc. And see how it progresses.
I'm not sure on what to do with the roller yet, I might try and shape it a little on the lathe, but not much. A new lenght is cheap enough anyway if I want another.
