GM 808/909/OG Etc - Whats the difference?
« on: April 11, 2013, 01:09:17 PM »

Hi all

Don't worry I know the obvious differences between the models etc but wondering the following

I've never owned a GM bat before but after falling in love with the GM Zona on a GM trackday the other week i'm going to pick one up over the weekend.

I'm just wondering if the GM users could tell me how much difference there is between 808/909/OG models?

Its looking like the difference in price betwen an 808 model and Original model is about £100 or so, so is it worth the extra money or with a company like GM is the grade 2 (808) willow going to be good enough anyway?

Thanks for any advice

Each of the GM Models are all the same shape/size (i.e. a GM Icon 808 will be identical to the Icon LE) then the weight is down to natural variations in the willow.

GM also grade on looks only, so if it was me, i would be trailing through the shop looking for the lightest, best performing 606/707/808 bat in the model I was looking for.

I think just looks and weight. They are all pressed pretty hard, so it is quite hard to judge the performance. Are you sure you want to go for the Zona though? The one I picked up picked up really nicely, but seemed to have a small sweetspot...

Unlike most of us on here, he's actually used a Zona before buying it, so has a decent idea as to what will work for him!!!

If you look at the bat though the sweetspot is huge and probably makes up 1/3rd of the lower part of the bat

The remaining bits being the toe and just under the stickers

No matter what bat you use if you hit the toe or the higher part its going to go nowhere

Just my thought anyway

As you can imagine i picked up and used all the range on the trackday and there wasn't many people there and was just immense and my personal favourite my far

I know it wouldn't be everyones pick but I guess its just what feels right for you

Thanks for all the advice!

Fair enough! If I had a choice, I would have the Zona handle on every one of the GM bats. The Argon and Octane handles seemed too thin, so maybe that would be why the Zona felt the nicest for me as well. Unfortunately, I hit a lot of balls on the toe, so need a pretty extended middle from the toe to the splice! :-[

Almost looks like a thread made for me lmao
The Original is a Grade 1 bat with maybe one minor blemish on the face
909 is still a Grade 1 with maybe 2 minor blemishes
808 is Grade 2 so similar to a 909 but with maybe another blemish and a more heartwood

We at Gunn and Moore do grade on looks and then performance after after they are made.

I have a 606, the face looks exactly like an Original L.E I saw in my local shop earlier. Bit of a stain on the back but that doesn't matter. Like Buzz said, have a look through the lower models, you'll find a gem and save yourself £200

I had a GM Hero 909 and went like a train, like people have said you're best off looking through a few bats see which feels best in your hands

Unless you find a bargin, or a real stunner then save your money and go for an 808, both the staff at Romida and also Lorrimers have said beyond 808 you are only paying for looks and not for extra performance.

I've had GMs for ever until I joined this forum and discovered independent pod shavers.

Thanks for all the advice

It seems like you can't go wrong with an 808 model then and possibly the odd 606/707

Ill take a look at the 808 in my local shop and if I get it ill get pictures up!
