How do carbon handles improve performance?
« on: April 17, 2013, 08:40:59 AM »

I had my first net session today with a Ballistic 6000. I have had the bat since last year but it has never been used. Can anyone explain how the carbon handle is supposed to increase performance?

Weight difference = more willow in the blade
Flex = Less energy lost to the flex in the handle therefore put into the ball

Im sure there are meant to be others but thats all I can think of.

Basically all there is to it. A Carbon insert is supposed to make the handle stiffer and therefore reduce vibrational energy loss.

Just to add its very much something you have to get used to as it feels very different to a standard cane handle. The rebound off the bat not only feels different but also sounds different.

I used the Ballistic back to back with a cor 3 Super, Rogue Players and Calibre 6000. The Rogue and Calibre were good. But I have been using the cor 3 for the last 2 weeks and it just smashes the ball. The Ballistic was better. Have never hit the ball  that hard that consistently. Even mishit shots were flying. It felt like the bat was less susceptible to twisting. The Calibre is also UK made so I have to put the difference in power down to the handle. I know it s a different profile - the Calibre has an absurd amount of concaving. The Cor 3 was going to start the season. Looks like it will be relegated to the bench.

I have a Ballistic 6000 with that handle too, and I have to agree that it seriously goes.
The one I have is only 2'8 ish but it seems to fight above its weight.
Once you get used to the different feel and start to middle balls, it absolutely flies!  8)
Very impressed with these bats!

i had a Laver Carbo and it felt different, the hand was stiff and it felt like the ball was slapping off the face but it went miles.

Im thinking that if you wrap a standard handle very tightly with something like elastotape it would have a similar effect?

I have a Puma Stealth 5000 with the Carbon Core handle. It took a bit of getting used to in the beginning but when I got used to it the ball absolutely flew off the middle with little effort.  Very little vibration and sometimes it didn't even feel I'd hit the ball well as there wasn't much sound. It's probably getting close to the end of it's life now but still goes.  I'd definitely use a bat with a carbon handle again.

I know laver do these types of handles and slazenger do something similar too. Are there many other brands that offer them?

Shame slazenger don't do the new handle alongside their tas inserts as that would probably be quite a good bat. Another odd little thing is that my iphone always wants to autocorrect slazenger to sleaze, maybe it's a hidden message about how sports direct run things.

You could always buy a V1200 hex and have it retro-fitted with the TAS inserts. Costs $85AU to have the TAS inserts fitted.

Might be going off topic but does anyone know if the TAS inserts really work? I think after loving slaz kit when I was younger I'm hopefull they're getting better again.

I suspect that the improve the breadth of the middle, but I can't imagine that they make an enormous difference.

My kinetic 5000 is being fitted with them now. I'll let you know if they work in a couple if weeks.

I had the ballistic 6000 didn't feel too different to a normal handle IMO but did notice a difference in miss timed shots eg no vibration. Had the titanium gn nitro which was very strange and sounded just as strange.

A stiffer handle definitely has a positive effect on performance, either that, or I strike the ball harder than I used to. 8) I have been using my Laver PB with a C-ten handle quite a lot, and I am finding it lovely to play with, I've not really tried to have a net where I have tried to hit everything hard with it, (The type of players Laver recommend go for a stiffer handle) but the drives I hit, I sometimes can't help but hold the pose because it actually feels quite nice now that I have gotten used to it. :)
