Heavy bats and how they pick up...
« on: April 17, 2013, 04:31:56 PM »

So, I'm really excited about getting my first custom bat made.  I typically use a 2.12 and that gives me the option of getting a Tendulkar profile with no concaving with a fairly chunky edge. From whatever I have read on the forum, people get concaving to attain bigger edges in lighter bats. Assuming the weight is around 2.12/2.13 though, which bat would pick up better? See, I'm quite excited about owning a bat similiar to the little master but would opt for some concaving if that would mean that the bat would pick up better.

Would be great to hear from other forum membahs with the Sachin profile. Cheers!

Concaving does usually allow you to get bigger edges, plus concaving can give better/lighter pick-up, depending on how high or low the middle is.
Another factor is how well it is balanced! I have had some bats that have a mid-low middle with no concaving and because they are so well balanced, seemed to pickup an ounce or so lighter than they should have!!  :o
If you can use a 2'12 bat confortably, then I would always go with a bat with no concaving! I have a few with this kind of spec and no concaving, and the middles on these bats are both long and exceptionally wide!!
Whatever you decide, best of luck to you  8)

Doesn't having extra grips help with the pick-up?

It can do...but the trade off for that is a heavier dead weight!!

You could try a counter weight on top of the handle but not sure if it works .... Anyone tried it with golfers lead tape?

Thanks for the nudge Pete! I do want to get a bat with no concaving but was just a teeny bit afraid about the pick up. I certainly want a mid/low middle. On most days I'm comfortable with a 2.12. Fairly low slow piches most of the time. Sometimes though I either get a bouncy track or a quick bowler and then I can struggle a bit with the cut. I usually trigger or not play the cut at all in those instances. Provided I'm still there ofcourse. Lighter bats just smell fishy you know?

Well, I suppose I'll simply have to trust the batmaker to get the balance right! Thanks, again...

I like one grip. Certainly no more than two.

This is mine mate. Very close to a Tendulkar profile, but weighs 2.8 and goes like sh*t off a shovel. It's probably the closest you would ever get to that shape at that weight.

I got lucky ;)

I would say that you are best with a non-concaved bat with decent sized edges. Edges aren't everything, I think around 30mm is a good size. :) In terms of pick up, I find that concaved and non-concaved bats generally pick up the same, it's all about the distribution of wood and how the batmaker has balanced the bat. 8)

Ooh, heavy bats, my specialist subject.

If you are going for a Tendulkar style profile, you need to accept that it will, more or less, pick up its weight come what may - the only similar thing I've seen that doesn;t is a modified Hattori that Matt made me last year, which maybe comes in an ounce light in feel.  If you want to feel like you haven't got a 3lb-ER, you need a higher spine, which elongates the middle and seems to give a knife like pick up (M&H Distinction and H4L Tempo in my possession both feature this) or look for a light weight cleft - which usually means one that is not so cosmetically sppealing (I have a 3lb Powerbow Extreme that doesn't feel anything of the sort).

I would say its down to the bat maker. No bat should have a heavy pick up unless you purposely ask for it. A decent bat maker should be able to balance a bat. If your a bit worried maybe lose a couple of mm off the edges and put some more wood up by the shoulders.

You call 2lb12 heavy??

If you can use the weight your fine but I see too many get swayed by the size of heavy bats then can't lift them which is quite funny

Down to skill of bat maker to make them pick up light but I've found as others more concaving tend to pick up lighter but I prefer meeeeeaaaaattt

Just to confirm, that bat I posted is a Hattori and picks up very light. Roco, you can have a go when we play you mate

I don't think thats heavy at all mate which is why I play with that weight. But, generally speaking, people play with much lighter bats. My last two bats weighed 2.12ish. I tend go at short stuff outside off like a woodcutter on crystal meth so was wondering if a no concaving low middle would affect my efficacy but I'm gonna try anyhoo. This is, after all, the first of many customs. Touchwood.
