Hang on a sec, it's not just about the pick-up. Pete got his hands on an Icon that weighed a little over three pounds that was allegedly one used by Ravi Bop.

The pick-up on this bat was stunning. There was no way on earth it felt like a 3lb+ bat. Stunning. And then we all came to use it. And behold the curse of the three pounder struck. All of us were used to something between about 2lb 10oz and 2lb 12oz. All of us were late with our shots, slow aligning the bat with the ball, etc, to such an extent that you could see the delay as we were facing the bowling machine.

That's not to say that we couldn't relearn our muscles to cope with a heavier bat, or build up strength to do it. Simply that in order to make such a significant jump in weight, there was a clear impact to it.

So while lightweight pick-up on a heavier bat is important, it isn't just that that affects the way you play, as you still have to be able to time and propel the bat in a fashion that means you aren't getting bowled/edges/are sticll scoring runs, and that adjustment may take a lot longer.
I think that's the problem. While pick up may be great (and we all love it - ish) 3 lb is still 3 lb once it's up there.
