Defending Yorkers
« on: April 20, 2013, 07:30:25 AM »

Help! I keep getting yorked. It has been my most common form of dismissal my entire life. I am a left hand bat and it is right arm over bowling. I don't tend to get yorked when they go round the wicket. I got a first baller last night and last season, I got a first baller the first game I played, yorked. Before that I hadn't got a first baller in almost 20 years. I also got a first baller in my first game for my new/old club in Sept although that wasn't a yorker. An another note I have wore my ayrtek for two games and got two goldies should I ever wear it again. Please help season starts proper next week and there is competition for my batting place.

If you never want to wear the Ayrtek again send it my way mate, would be a shame to see it go unused  ;)

Have you got a high back lift?

What shots were you playing to these deliveries?

I high a rediculous back lift and the only way for me to play a yorker really is normally quite a firm stab to the floor (always get cracks in my bats toe) or seeing it through the air i try to gain some length on my front foot.

Ok, daft question. How tall are you? Simple reason I ask is that I found moving from a SH to a longer bat stopped the yorkers getting through...

I was trying to block it!i see it early that is a yorker but then seem to get tied up. I think I might come across the line of it. They generally swing on in on me. I'm 6ft with a low grip morganesque grip. Bat lift is quite high hold bat stump high on delivery then lift higher about another 45 degrees so not quite lara!Used long blade for few games and stood up taller didn't work still got yorked. It is becoming a bit of a problem seems to be worse. At least some guys give me practice in the nets because it is the way to get me out. I usually open batted 5 last night so don't normally get a yorker first ball get my eye in then I'm fine or at least not as susceptible. About to go for net today will try to get some throw downs. Any more tips greatly appreciated. Was thinking of trying to lunge forward. I have also tried batting outside crease and batting deep in crease.

Ps ayrteks fly through the air very quickly.

I have a massive problem with yorker and fuller length balls on middle/leg. Its all been caused by a couple of things that with advice from nickauger i'm working on. First off I had a trigger that I never knew of which had my front foot moving forward a little and over towards off. As well as this my backlift wasn't straight and moved around a lot. The combination meant I was basically coming down from 3rd slip of somewhere and playing across my pads and trying to hit to midwicket.

Cut out the trigger, straightened the backlift by gripping far less with bottom hand and its a lot better - now playing these straight back or to mid on. Best thing stick a video up on here so you can get some advice or get a coach to take a look at you.

Well guys had my net 3 yorkers 3 cleaned bowls! But we think we have solved it. Similar issues to gdb19. Bat angle at slips and comes down straight for other deliveries but as soon as a yorker comes along I jag it down at the angle from the slips so not much chance of hitting ball. Next issue head falling way over on off side. Next issue to combat yorker I opened up, but then to align myself I was triggering my front foot across to off thus defeating purpose of being open and causing me to fall over. To combat weakness I was gripping bat too tight with bottom hand so that was causing me to go across line too. So looser grip on bottom hand and bending bottom hand arm more and bringing bat tighter to body. Few throws down later and I'm cured! Maybe if I had an elite and not a premier arytek my head would be lighter and not fall over as much! So there we have it, I will keep you posted on developments 20/20 on Friday night and 1st game proper next sat.

Good stuff, I really only grip with my thumb and two fingers on the bottom hand now during my backlift. Seems to work for me and gripping less hard helps my backlift be far straighter than before hence coming down straighter onto the ball.

I've toyed with doing a Gilchrist and using a squash ball in my glove but don't have one around.

Sounds like you get a lot of good deliveries and shouldn't be too worried. If I kept getting in-swinging yorkers I'd count myself unlucky

Thanks mate. I am afraid it is the left handers curse good away swing bowler to the righty inswing to the leftie. I normally open and I don't normally get one until my eye is in. On Friday batted 5 and the bowler had already yorked two other batsmen. Was a good ball but the next two he bowled to the new batsman one way down leg and then the other way down off both wides, so was unlucky I got the one good one out of 3. In nets the boys know I have this weakness so every ball they try to bowl a yorker. I think the major problem has been opening up front leg. As soon as you open up the bat automatically moves towards the slips. Try it. A good yorker will get lots of people but it was definitely a technique problem with me which had crept in because while it was a problem before it was not this bad. Like most guys I am bad starter, tend to get single figures or I get a score so it is just about keeping that yorker out until I'm in.

ps will give the arytek one more game but if it is a goldie expect to see on the forum at a reduced price due to to damage!

Sounds like you're getting there. Like you say, a good yorker will do for most bats - and in my experience a leg stump one that tucks you up is the worst of the lot! Feeling the pain!  ;)

I had a similiar problem a long while back. Never really understood what was causing it. But I read this article about Steve Waugh and the boxer's stance and I kinda tried to implement that or whatever I understood it to be. I crouched a little and focussed on being nimble and combative, ready to pounce on the ball almost. And voila, my yorker problem disappeared overnight. In fact, I was smashing anything on a fullish length. Not sure if this helps at all. Wish I could find the article. I reverted back to a more relaxed stance later on but yorker problem never came back thankfully...

I did get yorked by an inswinger a couple of months ago but I was trying to be cute then. I've been trying to imitate cricketers all my life. Big fan of mirror neurons. Sometimes it works(awesome sauce) and sometimes it doesn't. Watching Vorat Kohli calmly clear his front foot a fraction of a second before a deadly Malinga yorker turned up and steer it the deep square leg boundary? Nope, doesn't work.

I'm around 6ft5 and had similar problems, I think the best thing to do even if you have a high backlift is just to watch the ball the whole way, a lot of people just watch it to a certain point and then assume that it'll hit the bat, watching it the whole way helps, it could be to do with if you are super tall and using a sh also, I changed from an sh to a longer bat and it also helped
